White sun stripes from the top of the screen

Hello everyone,

I own a 3year old iMac 24" model 2008. On the top of the screen theres appeared some white "sun"-alike stripes.

I got the iMac from someone which unfortunately is a smoker, so the first thing i did was cleaning the glass, which did alot for the fuzzy smudges. But theres something wrong in the LCD screen itself.

I have taken a photo to illustrate the problem.

My observation are that its easier to see when theres backlight, so when the screen is black its almost not visible.

I wonder if theres any chance that dust/smoke has got its way inside of the LCD even though the stripes look way too symmetric.

So i spend 2hours today opening my iMac. At first glance i could see there was some amount of dust in different places which i blew away with air on a can. Afterwards i disassembled the LCD and opened it. There was a big amount of dust on the backlight (white) plate and some burned dust on the backside of the LCD (yes it was burned onto the screen!!).

I cleaned it all through, blew all dust away and assembled it.

The screen is much brighter now and all the smudge is gone! It looks like new. :-)

I am in a graphics company and we have purchased over 100 of these i-Macs, 80% of them have this issue. I feel another recall is in order from Apple. Our company has already payed for 1 to be fixed that is out of warranty it was $600+ to have repaired. I came in to work today and another one has been reported by an end user as being bad. Apple it is time to step up and recall the ones with this issue, time to give back some of the billions you have made off your crappy products, they are way too expensive to be failing like this. No one paying $1800 + for a computer should not have to take their own Mac apart (which is like brain surgery) to fix a burnt display issue. Apple wake up and acknowledge this issue!!
