I'm having a similar problem. If I zap my PRAM, I can start up using the wired ethernet USB adapter. But if I plug a second device into the other USB port, the ethernet dies. And it stays dead until I restart and zap the PRAM again.
I have also lost ethernet after 10.7.4 update. cannot get an IP address from the network. Network preferences shows USB as unplugged. 11" Macbook Air, latest version.
I have also the same problem. My USB ethernet adaptator connected to a recently upgraded Macbook Air Lion 10.7.4 is no more recognized.
Correction: the USB ethernet adapter seems to be recognized (see menu "About this Mac" >> System report >> Hardware >> USB (Apple USB Ethernet Adapter appears in the list) but does no more pick up an IP address (DHCP config.).
add me to the list of people with this problem. updated to 10.7.4 and suddenly my usb ethernet adaptor stopped working on my macbook air.
* unplugged all usb devices and tried second usb port.
* reset pram and smc.
* deleted all my network services, then readded.
* created a new network location and added services.
* created a new user.
no change with any of the above. the usb adaptor is recognized -- when i plug it in, the lights flash for a bit and if i run ifconfig from the terminal it looks like it does grab an ip address for a second, then the lights stop flashing and it says no ip address and not connected.
what is odd is that if i restart the macbook air, the adaptor will light up and blink as normal while it sits at the login screen and will not die. as soon as i log in, it dies.
Is there anything else plugged into any USB port? I've filed Apple bug #11433790 in which other USB devices prevent the USB/ethernet interface from working. Here's what I do to make it right:
* Remove all USB devices
* Shut down
* Reset the PRAM and SMC
* Restart
* Insert just the USB/Ethernet adapter. Wait a good long while. (3 minutes)
If I do this, mine starts working. If I insert a USB drive, USB audio output device, or an iPod Nano my USB/Ethernet usually stops working. (Sometimes I luck out and it's fine.)
sorenr -- thanks for the response. tried that and it didn't work.
That didn't work for me too.
Same problem with my USB ethernet adapter....
Blinks as if everything works. I also found out, that it actually gets an IP adress - but only for a short moment.
I f...... tried all the tricks.
And it's soooo funny....
I bought the adapter because the update before this one messed up with my internal ethernet card (iMac 27"). The only solution to that problem is to change the board but I yet haven't got the time to wait 4 weeks to get my computer back from repair.
But now it's time........
I just spent 90 minutes on the phone with Apple tech support. We were able to track this specific problem to the "Android File Transfer Agent" which was in my Login Items list. This Google program is used to allow Mac OSX the ability to communicate via MTP to an Android phone. This software lets you see the Android as a drive in Mac OSX. If you uninstall this software, the behaviour listed goes away.
I hope this helps.
That definitely helps. I'm running Android File Transfer Agent, and my problems stopped when I removed it from my Login items list.
unfortunately, this isn't the cause of this problem for me. i don't have the android file transfer agent installed.
in fact, the only login item i did have was fantastical. i removed that and restarted, but the usb ethernet still dies on login.
anybody have any new info? still doesn't work for me.
I also have the same issue with the USB ethernet on my 2011 13" Macbook Air with 10.7.4. I don't have Android or the Android File Transfer Agent.
On the list, 2011 Macbook Air 13".
