Can I download files while time machine backups?

Question

Can I download files while time machine backups?

This back-up is going to take too long. I would like to update one application while time machine backs up my Macbook pro. Can I download stuff while time machine is backing up my system? I hope so!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Thanks Kappy. I could not spend 20 hours without my Mac but was afraid to mess up the back-up.
