My wife's Mac changed resolutions - possibly as a result of running a full-screen game. She says it has happened before. I told her to reboot and let me know if that helped.
It didn't, so I went to settings to change its resolution, seeing only 2 options, 1920 x 1200 or 960 x 600.
I told her tonight to turn her computer all the way off, meanwhile I would see what I could find out.
What should I look at to trace down her problem?

Try clicking Detect Displays in the Displays preferences. If that has no effect then try a smc and pram reset.
You are most welcome, it helps me get ramped up learning OS X as well.

We just got her computer back from the Apple Store again. This time the Genius got feedback from Apple that it was aware of the problem and is working on it.
I hope it lets me know so that when the fix comes, I can fix her resolution.
One of the things the Genius did was reinstall Lion, so we had to restore. I booted up, and it wanted me to select her MacIntosh disk as the source disk. No way was I going to risk overwriting her Time Machine disk with her Mac's drive. So I phoned for help, and was given a computer that didn't understand what I wanted, and finally a person who needed to know her serial number. My eyes aren't good enough to read the serial number on the bottom of the stand, and without the restore working, I couldn't get it via software. So I went to the Apple Store, and they said the message was misleading.
At any rate, when I got home, I did a safer solution, I held option down and booted into my recovery disk. This time the instructions for restoring were unambiguous, and her computer is restoring now.
Still no sign from Apple that they are working on it, other than that one statement from a Genius.
It's a secret.
Frustrating! I've been waiting for the fix too. I hope they get around to it. There has been a serious lack of attention to details since Mr. Jobs' death. I don't know if you use iTunes much, but it's much worse there.

It seems that Occam's Razor applies here. We have 2 2007 iMacs, updated to 10.4.7 and one went off the path. The display rez was super big.
It was a simple fix, after trying the suggestions herein. Go to systems prefs/mose/ and unclick the "zoom while using scroll wheel while holding." The problem was resolved. Did not have said item checked in our other iMac and had no problem as stated. Do not know if this works for the 2006 models...
I don't remember which of everything else I tried before. But this last sugestion didn't do anything for me.
The following works:
Go to system prefs>universal access & make sure zoom is off. Go into options & check "use scroll wheel with modifier keys to zoom". Then you can hold down the control key on any page & scroll up & down to zoom in & out.
This will work until they issue a software fix.
By the way, I'm using a trackpad.
I'm still not seeing more than the two resolutions.
