imac only has 2 resolutions

My wife's Mac changed resolutions - possibly as a result of running a full-screen game. She says it has happened before. I told her to reboot and let me know if that helped.

It didn't, so I went to settings to change its resolution, seeing only 2 options, 1920 x 1200 or 960 x 600.

I told her tonight to turn her computer all the way off, meanwhile I would see what I could find out.

What should I look at to trace down her problem?

24, Mac OS X (10.7), Home workgroup

Try clicking Detect Displays in the Displays preferences. If that has no effect then try a smc and pram reset.

Same here.....still just two resolutions. I thought Apple was going to fix this with an upgrade on Lion to 10.7.5, but I've been waiting for that since this post started. Oh, well, I may just have to get a new iMac when the new ones come out. Mine is over 5 1/2 years old now but still working fine. I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro, and it works like a charm. No battery or speed problems or anything else.

I agree with the planned obsolescence comment. That fact, combined with the high price for Apple products in general, have me seriously considering a return to Windows products. A desktop box or a laptop for a fraction of the cost is much cheaper to replace every 3-5 years than Apple products, given the same useful life span. Say what you will about Microsoft, but the fact that hardware is not manufactured and developed in-house creates competition, innovation, and also drives prices down. My 6+ year Apple experiment may be coming to an end. I love my 24" iMac, I have really enjoyed learning a new OS, but the hardware problems I've experienced with this particular unit and the fact that it is "getting old" (as am I) may be the deciding factor. For now, I'm still waiting to see the latest update to 10.7 Lion to see if this screen res issue is addressed.

At this point, this issue alone is not enough to cause me to return to Windows. I dread the thought. All I have to do is think back to all the problems I used to have with Microsoft and Windows before I made the change to Apple. Plus all my friends who have Windows stuff now still have the same old problems and frustrations. I have two Macs, two iPads, an iPhone and an iPod, and it would take a whole lot for me to leave Apple. For my money, the old adage "you get what you pay for" is true. Apple quality just cannot be beat in my humble opinion. I am so willing to pay big bucks for quality when it comes to computers. The frustration factor is huge for me, and Apple has not disappointed me at all. This little resolution problem is something I can live with when I consider the alternative.

I agree with JazzmanJohn. Having been an IP lawyer I acted for Apple 25+ years ago. I never had an Apple (apart for an Apple II clone). That was really because all the business/corporate people had Microsoft and compatibility was a major concern. I bought my iMac 6 years ago out of frustration with a new Dell that did not work. Since then I have appreciated the lack of viruses, the lack of need to buy clunky antivirus software and keep it up to date, the lack of crashes and the superior memory management. Apple DOS was written by young ( one barely a teenager) enthusiastic guys who thought outside the box. That still seems to be the case. Whilst I am irritated that my 6 year old computer will have to be replaced, so will my iPhone 3 but then that's the price one pays for innovation.
