No sound after OSX 10.7.4 update

Try to rename folder Audio to Audio.old in /Library/Preferences. It helped me.

.. but I have a lots of other problems (can't authentizate in System Preferences, display is sometimes black only with rainbow cursor). I hate this update.

I have tried boot in Save mode and Repair Permissions, install combo update but it doesn't work, nothing doesn't work so I have reinstall my Mac and now everything works fine with 10.7.4 clean installation. I have Time Machine backup with my documents but I'm restoring them manually. On the other hand, It's easiest way to clean up..

I've had problems with sound since installing lion on my MBP 15 early 2011. Not sure what happened. I got the Logic board replaced twice and the same problem comes up. Reset pram, SMC and everything. It might just be os X or some other program but I'm pretty sure its the OS.

Why doesn't help already!!!!

Try this.

Finder > Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

In the sidebar click Built-in-Output, if not already selected.

Select Output tab, if not already.

Move the slider a bit for Master Volume.

Same boat here. I haven't tried the renaming the folder Audio to Audio.old in /Library/Preferences because after playing with Audio MIDI Setup I can get static sound out of my HDMI speakers (attached to HDMI monitor) when playing with the speaker configuration. Sound still comes form my 13" MBP (late 2011) eventhough HDMI is selected for sound output. This started, like others, after applying 10.7.4 patch, non combo. *watched*

hmmm, I just restarted the program that was playing the sound (with HDMI still attached) and the sound is now being output through HDMI. I guess this a workaround but I am used to having a program open, plugging in HDMI and having the sound sent automatically to HDMI. Reply is this works for you. Unless this bug is patched, I guess that this is now my new protocol.

formatting and reinstall is not a reasonable solution in my mind. that is saying "we dont care and you can pay the 'geniuses' to fix it for you because we didnt bug test enough"

I have the same problem with the sound right after I have updated to 10.7.4. Looks like this bug is coming with the latest update. Seems that after I restart twice the sound comes back to normal, but I also noticed that when the sound doesn't work the OS is acting slow.

Hopefully Apple will fix this issue asap.

Wow things are getting bad. I have the same problem after updating to 10.7.4

The control icon is greyed out and there is nothing in the 'sound preferences' that allows this to be remedied.

Some of the solutions here are draconian (I should not have to reinstall to fix this, Steve Jobs would be turning in his grave) and Apple should be rightly ashamed that such a essential feature has gone to ground in the latest update.

Sane solutions appreciated. I can't record, I can't playback existing music, iTunes is useless, I'm not keen on silent movies, can't use Acrobat Connect.......the list goes on.

I have fixed this issue by doing the following:

- open terminal and type: sudo killall coreaudiod

- delete the two plist files from the HD/Library/Preferences/Audio/

1. com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist

2. com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

And than restarted, everything wen't back to normal.

Try this, it works 100%.
