I may have to run additional tests here. My normal work flow includes built in frame rate limitations and detelecine so most of my content ends up at 24 (23.976) fps. Test I made prior to first answer was a 24 fps source file so I did not have to worry about this. In fact, your 59.94 sample file using my normal work flow ended up as a 24 fps progressive file.

The Hauppauge digitizes at whatever resolution is fed into it. Tom and I use our DirecTV HD-DVRs which output in either 720p or 1080i, as selected. But the resulting file seems to always be 59.94 fps in either mode; even if we are digitizing a motion picture from a premium channel, or a television broadcast chennel as carried by DirecTV, or in my case, using their OTA AM21 Tuner, an OTA television broadcasting channel here in Los Angeles.

It may be different frame rate, if we set the DirecTV box to 480p for SD broadcasts, I will experiment later on that.

Tom wants to edit out commercials in MPEG Streamclip.

Can be done either before or after encoding. Would need to see a copy of the MP4 file he is using rather than your M2TS file to evaluate which work flow is best/easiest.

He cranks his source up to full data rate available on the Hauppauge which is about 17!

Probably a waste of file space if his content is of the same level of quality as the one you provided. Graphic detail already well deminished.

Audio encoding is usually AC3 passthrough from source - from the file analysis that I posted earlier, it looks like 48KHz at 384Kbps.

File was 48.0 KHz at 384 Kbps but only fron two channels were active according to my receiver.

I will convert it to MP4 and resend it to you. This is a container conversion and NOT a transcode.

No, In fact, it cannot even passthrough/process more than two channels simultaneously. (You can however, process three pairs of two channel audio in successive passes if you are a masochist.

The idea is to AVOID transcoding with the playback power of the ATV3.

This is what I was trying to do—i.e., get around having to re-compress the video data. Unfortunately, the M2TS file data you provided will not open properly in either QT or MPEG Streamclip when re-wrapped to eith MOV or MP4 files by VLC. That is why I was curious as to the nature of the MP4 file created the software you previously mentioned.

If source file only contains one audio track then transcoding is maditory if you want both AC3 and AAC audio tracks. Sine is is usually easier to transcode for DD5.1 AC3 to AAC, I normally go with HandBrake here.

No. Even the QT Export MPEG-4 "Passthrough" option does not work in MPEG Streamclip.

Looks GREAT! How did you accomplish the 59.94 to 24fps reduction?

If I can repeat that, I can convert my 720p - 59.94fps files to 24fps and they will run natively in the AppleTV1, which only runs 720p up to 25fps. Above that the maximum resolution is 540p, which is what I usually transcode to for my network of family & friends that I gifted classic AppleTV1's to...

As I previously indicated, none of the containers I created from your M2TS data couls be opened in either QT or MPEG Streamclip. That is why I want to know if your MP4 file can be opened properly in MPEG Streamclip. BTW, are you using the regular release (v1.9.2) or the current beta release?
