Streamclip Settings for Apple 3?

Has anyone used Streamclip to make files for their Apple TV 3?

If so, I am curious to what settings you used as I can't find any.

Thanks!

Jon: what is your best settings for AppleTV3 for ripping BluRay?

I generally use settings very similar to those already posted for HandBrake use. Primary differences are as follows:

a) Frame Rate: "Same as Source"

b) Picture Size: 1024x720 Anamorphic 1280x720 display

c) TrueHD Audio conversion to "AAC Auto @ 160 Kbps"

d) TrueHD Audio conversion to "AC3 6-Channel Discrete Auto @ 640Kbps"

b) Detelecine: "Off"

c) Decomb/Deinterlace: "Off"

This combination on my system converts faster than realtime and produces a comparatively small, high quality High Profile Level 3.1 file compatible with all of my current mobile/TV devices in service. (A non-anamorphic version of the same settings is a bit slower at or about realtime with no visual impreovement in visual quality as far as I can see.) This may or may not meet your requirements.

Check your email for a link to a sample file using my settings.

Do you have suggestions for 1080 output as my new ATV3 should arrive this afternoon?

Use same settings but increase anamorphic encode to 1536x1080 with 1920x1080 targeted display or non-anamorphic 1920x1080 setting. This will greatly slow down transcoding, increase the profile level and make the file incompatible with most other devices.

Also, why transcode AC3 to AC3; why not just passthru?

TrueHD is not AC3 and contains 8 audio channels. You can passthrough the AC3 audio if available. Discs may or may not contain both TrueHD and AC3 audio data.

Is this starting with the High Profile default setting on Handbrake?

No. HandBrake normally uses the minimum Profile/Level compatible with your settings. My "8x8 Transform" Advanced setting requires a minimum "High" Profile encode but the rest of my settings are Level 3.1 compatible.

Also does your original suggestion have compatiblility for the original AppleTV?

No. If I remember correctly, the original TV is limited to Main Profile, Level 3.1 compatible settings. You would have to change some of the Advanced and possibly Picture and/or Frame Rate settings for compatibility depending on source content.

Sorry: I do not understand. What default do you use before making these changes:

a) Frame Rate: "Same as Source"

b) Picture Size: 1024x720 Anamorphic 1280x720 display

c) TrueHD Audio conversion to "AAC Auto @ 160 Kbps"

d) TrueHD Audio conversion to "AC3 6-Channel Discrete Auto @ 640Kbps"

b) Detelecine: "Off"

c) Decomb/Deinterlace: "Off"

Also does my screenshot of aspect ratio above look correct?

Is this what you mean for b) Picture Size: 1024x720 Anamorphic 1280x720 display:

This particular movie is 2.35 to 1 aspect ratio.

It's the right idea but these particular settings look more for a 2.40:1 aspect source at Modulus 16 with no trimming. A 2.35:1 usually comes out as a 1024x544 anamorphic 1280x544 display encode at Modulus 16 if nothing is trimmed.

I previously posted images of suggested settings for a 1080p TV3 HandBrake conversion. The changes mentioned above are the differences for those images that I would normally use for my TV2/3 units for my home system which are "best" for my purposes.

Already covered.

You're right: 2.40:1; I mispoke. What settings should I adjust here for this aspect ratio?

In most cases you will not really see any difference in the aspect ratio. However, if you are a perfectionist and willing to trade off encoding/decoding efficiency for a more precise aspect ratio setting, then before switching to the "Custom" pop-up:

a) Decrease the Modus setting to "4"

b) Click on "Width" change button until anamorphic Width x Height settings are 1280x532

c) Switch to the "Custom" pop-up

d) Now decrease the anamorphic Width setting to "1024"

Main Video screen should now indicate a 1024x532 anamorphic encode with a display of 1280x532 giving you a more precise aspect ratio of 2.406015:1 at the expense of efficiency/time required for encoding/decoding the data.

And I am still confused about which default to start from and then add your suggestions above...

I start with a "custom" preset. Actually, I have several:

TV2 (Basic ATV2 preset modified with slightly increased quality with minimum video noise settings for old B&W DVDs)

TV2+ (Basic ATV2 preset with increased quality, motion prediction 32 and no decimate settings for modern color action DVDs)

TV2++ (Basic ATV2 preset with increased quality, motion prediction 48 and no decimate settings for BDs)

I.e., TV2++ refers primarily to settings depicted in the "Advanced" settings image and to Constant Quality setting of 16 in "Video" Tab main screen image. I posted the images so you would know exactly what settings were used and could enter any changes as needed. I then stated the changes to the images that I would use for maximum compatibility with iPhone 4s, iPad2, iPad3, TV2, and TV3 devices currently in use. I only create one file for all devices since I have about 1,000 movies and 250 TV shows with thousands of episodes on my RAID drive at this time. (I.e. except for BD 3D discs, my entire video library which partially fills one bedroom upstairs, is backed up on my computer system for daily use while the original discs act as my archival copies for use if/when needed again. This arrangement protects my library from damage by visiting grandchildren and a wife who tends to think of my discs more as coasters for drinks than collectable media spanning 80 years of film and TV history.)
