Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
iTunes will not play music. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it yesterday and it worked without a problem. When I went to use it today, it did not play. This has been a problem for a while, although never caused to much of an issue.
I have today followed all the advice on this page:

but it did not appear to help, as drivers are up to date etc.
Any suggestions please?

I am using Mac. I went to "audio Midi setup" changed Out format from 44HZ to 32, then changed it back.
The problem is solved.

Right click or two finger click if you have a mac, click Delete and click move to trash, the song will still appear where it was before but its now only on iCloud, you'll now this as the iCloud symbol appear in the middle of the details. Click the iCloud symbol and you'll see the little countdown clock working. Now its been freshly downloaded from iCloud it should work.

This helped indirectly, in that I was not able to adjust this setting, but by hitting the 'Restore Defaults' button at the bottom of the Advanced Settings, it got me working again!
Thanks for the solution, it worked for me, I had assumed that it was a recent iTunes update at fault, so did a re-install. Reading your solution helped straight away as somehow my audio was set to 16 bit DVD quality.
I had this issue... probably occured when upgrading to Windows 10
I have a USB sound card (SB X-Fi), updated the drivers and problem fixed!
Also fixed a problem I had with youtube videos crashing and not playing in Internet Explorer, must have been related to the sound drivers.
The Solution above worked perfectly!!
figured it out!
Edit -> Preferences -> Playback -> Play Audio Using:
change the value from 'Windows Audio Session' to 'Direct Sound'
