I recall being able to download YouTuve videos and take them to my classroom. I could do this with snow leopard, but can't seem to get it to work with Lion. Any work arounds that anyone knows of? YouTube is blocked in our school district.

I'm trying to help someone so they don't have to download other software. Other than Java, KeepVid requires no other software to function. It is usable as a web program (thus, no downloading needed)

Go to YouTube and read their Terms Of Use and Copyright Laws before considering downloading others property.

Right--no selling or claiming credit. My class is doing an aviation unit, and several "Wright Brother" videos would fit PERFECTLY in our thematic unit...I've been able to download the videos, they all come as .flv files, but none of the converters that I've used in the past seem to convert it to .mov files :-( So far, they all give error messages.
Shoot--I just realized that I worded my original post wrong :-(! So sorry! I need to convert the YouTUbe files to .mov, so that quick time will play them. Can't seem to do that, though..
Wasn't Java used to install the recent Flashback malware infiltrated half a million Macs? Handbrake is a wonderfully useful program for doing what the OP wants plus much more and doesn't present the threats seen in Java recently.

Actually, I already have handbrake.... That's what I used with Snow Leopard when I would take YouTubes to class. I would download it using realplayer downloader, and convert it with Handbrake. I'll try KeepVid and see what happens. Like I say, I can download fine--just not convert.

If YouTube is blocked then your school district doesn't want you using it. I am sure your school district doesn't want you violating copyright either. Downloading YouTube videos for viewing offline is always technically a copyright violation. Downloading YouTube videos and then publicly performing them is really a copyright violation. It puts the school district at legal risk and puts your job at risk.
Identify the videos you want to show in class. Then go talk to your school librarian about getting performance rights to use the video in class. You may qualify for a fair use exemption but you need to let your librarian make that call.
If the school uses Windows, you can type this in Cmd:
tracert www.youtube.com
Then, type in the IP address it gives you at the end of the trace in your web browser address bar. It might let you get on Youtube.
A free app called MPEG StreamClip can download, open in the player or convert YouTube Videos:

You can download youtube videos AS LONG AS you don't pass any video off as your own, or sell it to other people. It works like DVD's (of course, you can't charge for downloading Youtube videos).
Use KeepVid. It allows you to convert it as your downloading, with no watermarks in the video.
Also have a look at Handbrake.
