iPhone/iTunes Wifi sync doesn't work

Hi guys,

I don't even have hope to solve this problem anymore but I guess I should post this anyway and show apple the crap software they're giving us.

I'm on Lion 10.7.4 (iTunes 10.6.1) and, after upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1.1, my Wifi sync with iTunes stopped working. Out of nowhere. Looking for an answer I started digging on apple foruns and found out there are dozens of threads discussing the problem and literally hundreds of possible solutions. I've tried the following:

- Restart iTunes and iPhone (full power cycle).

- Check the "Sync over Wifi" option on iTunes when iPhone is connected using cable

- Uncheck the "Block iPhone, iPod and iPad from automatically sync" on iTunes > preferences > devices.

- Restart Router

- Reinstalling iTunes

- Restore iPhone

- Move to trash "com.apple.iTunes" and "MobileDevices.framework" files. Restart Mac after.

- Make Airport on Mac and iPhone forget the saved networks and reconfig them

- Open ports on router 123 (all), 3689 (TCP) and 5353 (UDP)

- Disable and enable uPnP on router

- Install Remote app

- Use "Release Liase" option on iPhone under Settings > General > Network > Wifi > Blue Arrow

NONE solved it. I gave up. Apple *****.

Interesting behaviours:

- Remote app doesn't work at all. I can't use it under Home Sharing or that code thing. My phone and Mac simple can't see each other anymore.

- iPhone conects fine using cable. Everything is working and, when I pull out the cable, iPhone vanish from the list. Even with the Wifi option enabled.

So, if any of you can solve it, you will have a place in heaven. And in Apple developing team, probably.

Thank you!

I have not had a chance to reproduce the dropout as yet and send logs to Apple. Hoping to have a chance to do so over the next few days.

One think further - do you have a Macbook with a solid state disk (i.e., one that can "power nap"?) Mine is a late 2011 15" Pro which does not have the ability to sync etc while sleeping.

It may be worthwhile checking your iOS7 devices when sync fails, to see if they have dropped off the WLAN. If you switch them on manually, they will usually connect so you need to be quick to notice if you have the WiFi or 3G/4G icon showing the instant the screen comes up. It would be interesting to see if you experience the same issue.

Following up on my last post, iOS 7.1 has just become available for me and I have updated all of my iOS7 devices.

It is interesting to note that the update appears to reset something to do with WiFi sync. It is now necessary to reestablish WiFi sync after the update. It is possible that some type of fix has come thtrough.

Early testing (over the past 2 hrs) seems to indicate that my iOS7 devices now reliably connect to my WLAN when in range. I will test the update over the next weekend, where I will try to reproduce the earlier problems with WLAN connections.

It seems from your testing that 7.1 is a step in the right direction, but perhaps there are more issues lurking under the surface....

Hi,

I haven't had any previous success with wifi synch with my iphone 5s (ios 7.1.1).

However, one look at your post with the workaround (back in March) & unchecking that one option (automatically synch...) in iTunes & now I've wifi synch working reliably on my very first pass. Nice work on the research & workaround.

2 Questions :

1. Is it normal for wifi synch to take a longer time (3x or more) to perform the same task or is that something that can be accelerated as well ? Primarly goal is to save synch time & battery of course.

2. Why wouldn't wifi synch work over 4G using the very same principles ? Is it a manufacturer restriction or some other technical reason ?

Thanks.

Had same problem. Solved by UNCHECKING "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" in Summary tab in iTunes.

Actually my iphone was now showing up in itunes AND "Sync Now" option in Itunes Wifi Sync in Iphone (Setting > General > Itunes Wifi Sync) was greyed out. But after unchecking "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" option the Sync Now button on Iphone was activated and i was able to sync through wifi.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Question 1:

Never wonder is something is normal with iTunes. Sync sometimes works, sometimes not. Sometimes it is fast, sometimes it require 1 hour. The sync is just broken and Apple ignore it. If I would have paid 100$ I wouldn't care about these bug. But I paid 840$. Not sure I will buy another broken device for this price.

Question 2:

Not sure what you mean.. Wifi sync over 4G?. you mean, sync your iPhone with your computer, when both are on 4G, or when your iphone share the internet connection by wifi to your computer?

I just wanted to follow up on the wifi sync issues. I am currently running Mac OS 10.9.4 and updated itunes to 11.3 last night. Since the update to itunes 11.3 wifi sync is working all the time. What I noticed though is that my external harddrive connected via thunderbolt is always on. The energy setting is set to put hard drives to sleep whenever possible. Prior to the itunes update all drives would go to sleep, unlike now my lacie has the blue light on indicating that it is not sleeping. additional point itunes is open. When I close itunes external drive goes to sleep. Is this a new setting? Did anyone else notice this or can replicate.

Would appreciate ate all input.
