iPhone 4S - iTunes Store app freezes when searching for Podcasts

This has me stumped. I have several Apple devices using my iTunes account, but only my iPhone is giving me grief lately.

iPhone 4S

iOS 5.1.1

iTunes Match is ON for music (does not affect podcasts in theory)

Recipe:

  1. Search for podcast I want to download using iTunes store app
  2. Find it and click on name to see episodes
  3. Results screen loads partially, then does nothing. Can see list of episodes, but cannot activate "Download" buttons.
  4. Wait for a few minutes. Wait a lot of minutes. Nothing changes, but network activity indicator is spinning around next to WiFi indicator.
  5. Quit iTunes app
  6. Restart app and it crashes
  7. Lather, rinse, repeat

I usually listen to episodes of the same 5 or 6 podcast series, like most folks. I was able to grab any of them directly from the iPhone before, but in the last few days it simply can't be done.

Clue: I CAN download music. I can pay for it. Just can't get podcasts.

What I've tried:

  • Log out and back in to store
  • Turn iTunes Match off and back on
  • Restart iPhone

No joy. Any ideas before I contact Apple support??

While we in this thread are all experiencing a problem, I've worked in the industry for a while and believe I've got some sense of perspective about it.

First, remember that Apple doesn't read these forums. Telling them to "fix something" here is just blowing hot air. These are user forums for self-help, not Apple Support.

Second, we have no idea - and I mean none - about the size and scope of this issue. It is human nature to feel that one's problems are very important, and online forums amplify that perception, but it doesn't make it so.

OK, so I have some idea about the size and scope of this issue. I keep up on a LOT of tech press/blogs/media, and this is NOT being discussed. That tells me that the likely number of affected users is small relative to the market. That doesn't mean that it is insignificant, but it does (anecdotally) indicate that the issue is not a problem for the majority of customers. If it were, there would be a buzz out there. Instead there is just a buzz in here.

I am not trying to be a apologist for Apple, only to clarify what is known and what is not. I look forward to this being fixed, but it's not causing my world to end. I just have to use iTunes on my Mac to get podcasts, which is exactly what I was doing for most of the time I've had an iPhone.

I have 3 iOS devices, the first is an iPhone 4s that has this issue for music and podcasts, and has 5.1.1.

I have a iPhone 4 with 5.1.1 that has this grey screen cutoff/issue for about 2seconds, then everything shows up and works fine.

And then I have an iPad 1st gen with just 5.1, and to get anything to load in the iTunes store takes well over a minute at each "click", and completely hangs the app while doing so.

All devices are 3G, and have the same issue on wifi or 3G. PC within the same wifi network works fine, and I don't have a large library on any of the devices... actually, none of them are even half full of anything (apps, music, vids).

What a p.i.t.a! Hope this issue gets resolved soon!

So far no luck with Apple other than getting a 1-800 number. I expect I'll be told that my iPhone is outside its warranty so I will have to pay for the privilege to be told that yes, this is a systemwide problem. 😠 Here is my online thread with iTunes support (in reverse chronological order):

Dear Rolf,

Dear Leonard:

I'm sorry, but it didn't help. This is a widespread problem as you can see from the many MANY messages from users experiencing the same problem. It is not a problem with my individual unit. I ask that since Apple owns iTunes and Apple owns iOS 5, Apple transfer this widespread technical glitch to the proper department to get it resolved. If that cannot be done, please explain why.

Rolf

> Thanks for getting back to me and providing the YouTube video documenting your concern.

> From the looks of things, the issue seems to involve more then just playing podcast as I noticed some of the song purchases don't play was well, and certain applications close upon opening. Since this is related to the iPhone not operating correctly after updating the iOS, you will want to contact one of our iOS Technical Support Advisors. As an Advisor for the iTunes Store, I handle issues related to billing, downloading, customer accounts, and the items available on the iTunes Store.

To Leonard:

Yes, many people are still having the same problem. There are several Apple Support Communities forums devoted to the topic. One person has created a YouTube movie of the problem here:

Here is the Support Communities thread that seems to have the most posts:>

This morning, I discovered that this problem isn't happening for EVERY podcast to which I subscribe. Seems like the pages for a lot of the more popular podcasts (Filmspotting, Mike and Tom Eat Snacks (actually ALL of the Nerdist channel podcasts), Earwolf podcasts, etc.) will NOT respond.

However, I subscribe to a few that are more... independent, and they seem to work just fine, and I can download them without issue on my iPhone 4S.

Ones that I've had success with:

CelticsStuffLive (a Boston Celtics podcast)

The Awake podcast (a fan-produced podcast about the NBC show)

KorraKast (a fan-produced podcast about the Nickelodeon show The Legend of Korra)

Could it have something to do with the way the bigger players / podcast networks aggregate their RSS feeds? I don't know. But it seems that the problem is not happening with every podcast across the entire iTunes store, for what it's worth.

May 30, 2012 10:20 AM in response to bagofbeef

@bagofbeef - it appears that the store objects affected all contain large track and/or episode lists. So I too can still download podcasts with a small number of available episodes (say, less than 15) but if the podcast page displays many episodes (like NPR's Planet Money, with hundreds) then the iTunes store app stalls out indefinitely.

Fortunately, one can still access the podcasts via the desktop version of iTunes and grab them from there. Not perfect, but it's how I did it for several years regardless. I just setup my iOS devices for WiFi sync with iTunes on one of the Macs and it's done automatically.

I've got this issue too.

For me it looks like podcasts with big backlists have trouble loading on the iPhone. Sometimes this crashes out iTunes, but the majority of the time it just takes a LONG time to load.

So my screen will look like the screenshot that canadianstarbuck posted, but If I wait 5 minutes or more, it will eventually properly load.

I'm guessing that interface wasn't just optimized for big backlist podcasts.
