No WiFi after 5.1.1 iPhone OS upgrade

Lost wifi connectivity on 3GS after 5.1.1 OS upgrade. Have tried EVERY remedy, short of wiping my whole phone (have done reboot, backup and restore, reset network settings, reset all settings, etc.). Apple says my "hardware must be broken." Hard to believe, with 350,000 hits with same problem on Google search, just in these few days since upgrade was released. What's the deal? I do not want to wipe my phone and start over (for obvious reasons), nor do I unnecessarily want to purchase a new phone (for even more obvious reasons). Clearly there needs to be a fix from Apple!

I suddenly had dropped wifi connections on an iPhone 4 (5.1), iPod (5.0.1), iMac (10.6.8) and new iPad (5.1.1) happening at the same time. Even while minutes before I had fast connections to my router (ranging between 35 mbps to 130 mbps). Only the iPod could reconnect after a while and got a lousy 1 mbps.... Something not OK. I opened the admin page of my router (fritz!box 7340) and saw another router next to a channel in use by my own router AND pumping out a strong signal.... So I configured a new channel (with only 1 slot in between my router and the other one). Right from that moment I regained the original speeds and my devices were able to connect. I had to "persuade" the iPhone and the iPod to reconnect (reset the the lease obtained, don't exactly know why, but on windows systems this always helps me out when experiencing problematic connections....). That seems to fix my sudden wifi problems.

Hope this may be of help to, at least, some of you.

No promises, but this worked for me...

Are any of you using an AirPort Express? I was having this same problem with my iPhone 4 (in fact all our wireless devices-ipad, ipod, and AppleTV) and for me the issue wasn't the 5.1.1 iOS update, it was a problem with the recent firmware update to the AirPort. No wifi on any of them, even though each device "saw" the network.

To fix it (after the firmware was updated) I had to update the AirPort utility in the iMac, too.

Go to Finder, open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Express icon, then click "edit" in the right hand corner. Click on the "Wireless" tab and change the security setting. (Mine is set to WPA2 Personal). I just selected WPA/WPA2 Personal, and then immediately set it back to WPA2 Personal. Doing that made the "Update" button become active in the lower right corner. I clicked Update and got the message "The devide and its network services will be temporarliy unavailable. Are you sure you want to continue?" Click continue and that seemed to force the completion of the update.

Another option may be to set up a new network connection while in the AirPort utility.

It's odd because I have a second wifi network at home (Belkin) and I wasn't able to access that one either. After forcing the update, both connections work.

Hope that works for some of you.

I have also been having weak wifi problems with my 3gs right after i updated to 5.1.1. After trying everything from reseting all settings to restoring as a new iphone i still have the same wifi problem. Just as i was considering throwing my phone at the wall and buying a galaxy i came across a video on youtube showing - how to repair a weak or no signal at all iphone 3gs.

What the person did, and i copied was as follows: First turn your phone off. Remove the sim card and card holder. Remove the two tiny screws at the bottom of the phone. Use some sort of suction cap to remove the front face of the phone from the main body ( i pryed it off with a tiny flat blade screwdriver), when you are removing the front panel make sure you start at the bottom as there are wires that connect the face of the phone to the main body of the phone located at the top. You dont actually fully remove the front panel as you want to keep these wires at the top of the phone in tact.

Now once the face was off the person said to look for a little sticker with the number 6 on it. It was located at the top of the phone, left hand side. This number 6 sticker is placed on a sort of button that should be clicked into place. On my phone it was dangling free. With a little bit of pressure i heard it click back into place and it was secured. There is only one place this button will go, it was very obvious when looking at it. Now just sqeeze the screen back into place starting at the top and working your way down until it is fully in place. Insert the two screws, the sim card and sim card holder.

I turned my phone back on and walla! Full strength wifi again!! Apparently that little button has a habbit of popping off once in a while and hopefully in your case as was with mine this is the problem. I know this will not be the case with everybody but it is worth a try i think. I would normally never try and fix or pull apart my phone but like i said earlier i was ready to smash it. Also the coincidence of it happening right after the update has got me stumped.

I thought i would post this as for the last 2 weeks iv been coming back to this thread for any update from apple or a fix..... Hope it helps.

I'm with the same problem here too, with my 4S 16gb.

The strange thing is that I left home with normal wifi connection and then when I came back, bam, no connection and no search of available connections.

Even with a restore, nothing happened, so I'm starting to get mad with this problem because in my area the 3G signal is very poor.

It would appear that there are at least a couple of things going on here.

Some have suggested that reattaching a loose wire to the #6 connector inside the iPhone solved their problem. If so, that's an obvious hardware issue.

Most have noted that the problem first appeared for them after upgrading to iOS 5.1.1. This suggests a software issue (at a guess, perhaps an old configuration file that doesn't play well with some upgraded iOS 5.1.1 software).

In my case (which sounds different still), after upgrading to iOS 5.1.1, my Wi-Fi and cell connections began to drop then reacquire constantly, repeating endlessly every 20-30 seconds. I have an old phone (3GS) and was at first wondering if an undervolt battery might be the problem. But then I reset my network settings:

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

When the phone came back up, I had to return to Settings > Wi-Fi to choose a network (the phone of course no longer had knowledge of my preferred networks). Voila! No more dropped Wi-Fi or cell. FWIW.
