No WiFi after 5.1.1 iPhone OS upgrade

Lost wifi connectivity on 3GS after 5.1.1 OS upgrade. Have tried EVERY remedy, short of wiping my whole phone (have done reboot, backup and restore, reset network settings, reset all settings, etc.). Apple says my "hardware must be broken." Hard to believe, with 350,000 hits with same problem on Google search, just in these few days since upgrade was released. What's the deal? I do not want to wipe my phone and start over (for obvious reasons), nor do I unnecessarily want to purchase a new phone (for even more obvious reasons). Clearly there needs to be a fix from Apple!

to dfrossar ... when I first read of your "overnight" fix, I thought to myself, "yeah, sure" -- since I've tried that one, along with virtually every other potential fix mentioned in these posts. Though, secretly, I hoped that it would work for you, such that I might try it one more time. (I also have 3GS)

I have tried everything short of completely wiping my phone or buying a new one. The only reason I haven't wiped my phone, is that I've read of two people who tried this, and the problem still remained. And what a mess it is to deal with that, unless it would actually work!

It is clearly a bug problem with Apple, perhaps not "fixed" because of the impending introduction of 6.0. And, heck, maybe the new upgrade will fix the problem. Or Apple is furiously working to make sure the bug does not remain in the 6.0 update -- in the meantime, not acknowledging the depth of this problem for PR reasons. Oh, it could be a bazillion things.

For me, very specifically, it does not allow me to access my network at home, because it will not respond to the CORRECT password when input. It sees all Wi-Fi options, but simply will not connect when a pw is required (I have tested this with other pw-required Wi-Fi's). If I go someplace with open Wi-Fi, requiring no pw, I get a connection. However, even in that instance, my connection disappears in several minutes if I let it sit idle. Then I have to seek out the connection manually.

I'm done with calling Apple. They won't admit there is a problem. And I refuse to go through the paces they would put me through all over again. This is, without question, the worst Apple experience I have had, and I've been a devoted Mac person since the late 80s. If one googles this issue, it's running at about 2.5 million hits currently. And a half million on Bing (tho I have no idea why the difference).

Contrarily, I have to enter a password to access a number of different Wi-Fi networks and all of them will connect flawlessly. It's just that my Wi-Fi and phone service then start to drop out, and come back, and drop out, and come back every 20-30 seconds. So maybe we've identified related, but different issues.

At this point, I'm hoping for an Apple bug fix.

I have a 3gs.

It's ridiculous and took me a couple of days to work it out, but I simply changed my base station name and password. Then I turned the iphone off and on again and... voilá, it's working fine.

The most stupid thing is that I was unable to see other (neighbours) wifi networks like I usualy do and after this it's all back to normal.

Has been like this for 3 days now.....starting to get frustruated as ****. APPLE PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!!!

SOLVED MY WIFI PROBLEM on iPhone 4S 64GB iOS 5.1.1 CDMA Sprint

*****: After iTunes restore to 5.1.1 WiFi connects normally but problem still present! "Cannot connect to the internet". My internet and Airport Extreme are working fine the iPhone WiFi is effing up.

SOLUTION: I toggled Airplane Mode on then I turned WiFi on, opend up the App Store voila fixed

Then reset and did erase all content and settings. It reactivated and worked normally thereafter right away!!!

***** though that the I had to erase my 64GB iPhone and even after a stock restore WiFI didn't work that is BS!!

This will not work for everyone I am guessing but good luck! If it persists then consider it a hardware issue and take it to a Genius and demand an exchange if possible.

I have this problem. Went to the genius bar and they gave me a new phone, well guess what this phone does the same thing, now even worse the wifi option is completely greyed out. I was starting to think it was my sim card, but who knows. Hopefully the new version of IOS fixes it. If not, I'll be going back to the genius bar to try and get a new one. What a hassle.

It seems to me that there may be a couple (or more) issues resulting in similar symptoms -- the ones that we're lumping together as "no Wi-Fi in iOS 5.1.1." Some above have reported success after exchanging their phone for a new one at an Apple Store. That would suggest defective hardware in those cases. Others have reported success with various software tweaks or resetting of Wi-Fi settings. (And how many of these phones are also jailbroken and unlocked? Another variable to consider.)

Myself, I find that I have the problem only when running one or two particular apps. When on Safari, for instance, Wi-Fi is constant. But when I run a particular mapping program I use for work (a program that accesses Wi-Fi and GPS and Location Services) Wi-Fi and cell service drop in and out every 20 seconds or so. What's up with that?

So, while I blame Apple for not at least commisserating with the (apparently many) people experiencing these symptoms -- the stonewall approach didn't win them any friends with the iPhone 4 antenna debacle, and it isn't winning them friends now -- I do have a bit of sympathy for having to deal with such an apparently complex service issue.

At this point, I'm just living with the problem and hoping iOS 6 fixes it -- perhaps accidentally.

Everything came back to normal last week(wi-fi working normally), stayed for a week or so, but then today, bam, again this problem with my 4S in 5.1.1.

Settings.app freezes when opening, then when it opens, I'm not able to find any wi-fi (even with everything related to my connection being ok).

Apple needs to fix this asap, because this topic is getting popular...
