No WiFi after 5.1.1 iPhone OS upgrade

Lost wifi connectivity on 3GS after 5.1.1 OS upgrade. Have tried EVERY remedy, short of wiping my whole phone (have done reboot, backup and restore, reset network settings, reset all settings, etc.). Apple says my "hardware must be broken." Hard to believe, with 350,000 hits with same problem on Google search, just in these few days since upgrade was released. What's the deal? I do not want to wipe my phone and start over (for obvious reasons), nor do I unnecessarily want to purchase a new phone (for even more obvious reasons). Clearly there needs to be a fix from Apple!

Just to report that after i cleared network settings, disconnected from my home wifi and also turned the wifi off, the next morning i tried and it connected. Am not jumping for joy here as i've heard many people who tried this only to discover a few days later that the problem persisted. So will monitor this for a couple of days and see what happens. Will report back.

I´ve just solved mine. Followed a previous advice. iPhone 4S new. 5.1.1. Greyed WIFI.

I turned Airplane mode on. Then reset network settings. When the phone turned on again it prompted to pick my WIFI network. Entered my password and now it´s working normally. This happened five minutes ago. I can´t be sure this is gonna last... Good luck to everybody!

I was having similar issues after the update. I called apple tech support to see if they could give me any insight (and maybe this is "known") but they wanted to charge me $35 for advice. No thanks

SO! I have done all the network resets you've suggested and wifi seems to be working, though I have to reset all my push notications (not a big deal) - the only issue I am still having which was the big issue in the first place, is my bluetooth will not stay connected

I have a Jeep with uconnect and it has been successfully paired since I purchased it. However yesterday (likely with the recent iOS 511 update) it dropped the connection and will no longer find the device. It says "phone unavailable". It is not a problem with uconnect, it is in the phone itself.

If I go into bluetooth settings the bluetooth icon comes up for a second, but will not find any devices, it only continues to search. With bluetooth turned on, the second I exit out of the bluetooth menu, and back into general, back into settings the icon goes away

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried:

  • Resetting network settings
  • Reconnecting to itunes
  • Doing a hard reset
  • Simply turning the phone off
  • Connecting the phone to a wall charger (getting desperate) and my bluetooth still won't remain "on"
    Thanks for your help!

My 4s just started this last night and I've tried everything to get wifi to work again..even a full restore. What I noticed last night was that we were leaving and a message popped up about connecting to my network and I dismissed it as we were about two blocks from home. When I got back home later, it could no longer see my wifi or any others.

I called apple about a month ago and here are the instructions I got....

1. Delete all your apps from multitasking (double click, hold a app, then press the red mark)

2. Go to settings, general, reset, reset network settings

3. When your phone restarts, turn it off manually, and then unplug your router for 5 mins

4. Turn on your phone, then plug in your router and connect.

Number four was just a guess since I called apple with my home phone which uses internet to call people, and then when I unplugged my router it the call dropped, so I improvised and it worked =P!

But now, a month later, the problem started again; so I tried what the apple guy said last time and it didn't work =[

BTW I have an Iphone 4s 5.1.1 and the people that don't like 5.1.1 and would like to drop to a lower ios, try this http://goo.gl/KObnY

Hope I helped someone, =]

I went to the Apple store/genius bar and they confirmed that 5.1.1 is "buggy". They restored my phone to factory settings to be safe. So when I got home I restored my phone to a previous back up (the one before I did the 5.1.1 update). Everything is 100% back to normal. I just had to add my music back since it doesn't come back once it's been erased.

To save yourself a trip, just restore to the backup before you updated. I wanted piece of mind my phone was okay and it is.

I asked when the next update would come out, but he wasn't sure.

Good luck!

i got my iphone 3gs as a birthday present. secondhand off ebay. as soon as i turned it on the wifi wasn't working. i've tried everything from setting up as a new iphone, to wiping it completely clean. as far as i know, it's not jailbroken. i've read through and tried all these suggestions and advice from other people but have had no success. i just tried to restore my iphone to a previous back up but it didn't work... it just restored back to the 5.1.1

this is my first iphone and have never backed it up. not really sure what i should do or how i can fix this problem. can anyone help me ??

Similar problem: after upgrading iphone 4S to 5.1.1 my phone wouldn't connect to the home wifi network. It could see it, but just couldn't seem to make the connection.

Tried most suggestions to no avail. Then, continuing to experiment, I seem to have stumbled on a solution (for my situation anyway).

1. Settings - wi-fi: OFF

2. Settings - General - Network - Cellular Data: OFF

3. Settings - wi-fi: ON (it then successfully connected!!!!)

4. Settings - General - Network - Cellular Data: ON

And going in and out of wi-fi range everything still seems to be working fine - switching between wi-fi and 3G as expected.

Maybe the Cellular Data was taking precedence over the wi-fi?

Hope this helps someone else too.

hi. did you find a solution. I just recently have this problem last night. at first it was the main screen in the settings that has the greyed wifi but in the network menu the wifi can still be activated. but earlier this morning that menu is also greyed out. I have tried restoring and it worked but after a few minutes it recurred again. restored it again and it worked and no wifi again recurred. and I tried restoring again but now it did not solved anything. I am getting a little frustrated. I live in the UAE and the apple service center is like 240 kms away from here. I do hope a solution comes up. My iPhone 4s was bought just last January. I am still optimistic that a solution will come up.

No luck here. I can "see" my home network in the wifi available options, but can't connect to it. Everything worked fine just a few hours ago. I can still connect to a mobile hotspot, just not my home network (Comcast). I have done a reset, I have done a restore. I hope someone finds a solution soon, I'm losing all faith in Apple - their stuff is supposed to work. Here we are with a months' long thread in their communities with no answer at all. Stinks.
