Macbook pro electronic "moo" sound.

i know its a weird title but honestly every once in a while i get this weird re-wind sound, i think its the harddrive. it sorta sounds like an electronic cow going "moo"

like i said it comes and goes so when its not around everything is peachy but then it happens and its OBNOXIOUS. sometimes i think the computers performance takes a hit.

i've read and heard clips of the whine sound and i can 100 percent say its not that.

anyone know or heard anything about what i'm talking about?

once it happens again i'll record it.

macbook pro 2.0, Mac OS X (10.4.5)

yah i can hear it too sometimes. I also thought of a cow ahahahahah

it appears normal. sounds like a little engine starting to spin.

Someone elsewhere on this forum suggested that it's the sound of the sudden motion sensor doing its thing. Do you hear it when the notebook is still or when you're moving it?

yes, there is another thread about it on here somewhere. It's definitely not the whining sound. I thought it was the optical drive trying to read nothing. but who knows.....

I have heard this when it's really quite in the house. I have isolated it to the Superdrive (no disc in drive) -- some kind of adjustment going on? At first I thought it was the iSight autofocusing.

I believe this sound is your hard drive "going to sleep" or "waking up". Check your "Energy" settings to see if you have this set to "sleep" which is the default.

A "Moo" sound? That's one for the books! I can just hear the laughter at the Apple Support Call In Center! LOL!

You're hearing the fans! They only spin up when needed. I've noticed the same on my PB during high processor use.

I don't think the fan should make an audible noise. My fans don't anyway. I have to put the stethoscope to the Notebook to hear the fans come on.

Yes i do believe it is the superdrive.

i put in a cd today and for some reason it happened, it happened cuz the cd was too scratched to be played.

so its either the super drive or just the cd drive in general.

lets hope this is the problem rather than a serious harddrive issue waiting to happen.

I hear it when the machine gets warm - I think its the second fan ramping up.

That's what I think. I've recorded the fan sound on my own PB and uploaded it here. Is this your moo? (It's made up of two clips: the fan starting up and spinning down. That's why there's a break in the sound.)

Nope, it's not that fan(s). I know what a fan sounds like. The sound is as if you had a camera and were zooming in and back out.

sidney- thats not the sound. its kinda like it but its followed by a "clunk" sound, like something is getting hit.

like i said before i do believe it is the superdrive.

it hasn't happened in a long time.

Mine does that too when its really hot. It sounds like a rev up for a second and then rev down for a second. Like something is trying to start up. I hear no fan noise on this as I did with my TiPB G4. THAT is the only sound that has weirded me out, I thought at first something was wrong but now I figure its doing something to cool the machine.
