With the Finder as the front most application, choose Finder -> Preferences -> General and make sure there is a tick mark next to CDs, DVDs, and iPods, under the option Show these items on the desktop.
Any luck there?

That section is already ticked. Tried unticking, saving then reticking. Still nothing. And now the ipod will not even connect to Itunes because "The iPod cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found." Same notice with my Iphone. So I can't sync anything.
Can you try and mount this iPod on another Mac or even a PC if possible to see if you can get any further there?

I plugged it into my iMac, same story. It only appears on the desktop while it is syncing in iTunes, after it is finished it disappears off of the desktop. I managed to transfer pictures from one computer to the other last week with my ipod classic. Don't understand why it is doing this now-I'm not doing anything differently.
Is the enable disk use option ticked from underneath the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes?
