My 17" Macbook Pro battery swelled up and kind of exploded. The apple genuis said it is still safe to use, that doesn't sound right.

I am just kind of worried that it doesn't even fit. Do I need to kind of pop the expanded portion of the battery to get it to fit back in? The case of the battery has come apart and so to fit it back in I would have to press it back together. The battery is low count and had great capacity when it happened. I don't want to have to buy another one when this one is fairly new.

I agree with you, that's not right.

This may seem to be a little problem - fix it before it becomes a big one.

Thanks, I was really surprised when he said it was okay. When it first happened I put it outside because I thought it was dangerous, but he said it was okay and that I might want to replace it soon.

Is this a genuine Apple battery? They have a one year warranty.

What you described is not normal for any battery.

I've read reports on the web about this problem happening with the 17" models. The battery swells up and, while it probably won't explode on you while you're using your computer, it can cause deformity to your computers body. Get it replaced professionally as soon as you can. If you're covered under warranty, that's even better.

Regardless of the batteries age, replace it. The technicians may work at a 'genius' bar but they are ordinary people and are prone to make the same mistakes that we all can.. You were given bad advice. A swollen battery is defective, plain and simple.
