New to Apple, frustrated with menu bar

You have shown us the FireFox case. This is what I and others want to see with Safari, i.e. the top menubar with the apple permanently in place while the full Safari screen with all its menu items are also visible, as when the cursor is held at the top of the full screen display when using Safari.

It appears that the only solution is to use FireFox. I have not yet dared to download Mountain Lion to see if this Safari annoyance has been fixed.

Yes!! That's what I want. I can not do this in Safari, only in FireFox. (Except in Safari when I hold the cursor at the top edge of the screen) What version of Safari are you using? It appears to be 6.0 as I am now running; but I had the problem with 5.7 also. I am running OSX 10.7.4 on a late 2009 21" iMac.

This is Safari 6 with Mountain Lion. It worked for me the same way with Safari 6 and Lion (10.7.4) and with Safari 5 and Lion.

All I do is drag the edges of Safari to the edges of the screen. It is not "Full Screen" mode.

Thanks. Now that I have gone to Safari 6 and rebooted a few times, I get ALMOST what you show in your screen shot, set up as you describe (not in "Full Screen"). Note in my screen shot below the extra, empty menu bar above the tabs bar. This empty bar occurs any time the apple bar is present. For example, if I go to FSM then the empty bar and Apple bar hide, but bringing cursor to screen top makes both show dynamically.

P.S. What is that icon on your Apple bar to the right of the spotlight icon?

Just discovered that the "empty menu bar" above the tabs that I mentioned earlier can be turned off under View>Hide Print Selection Bar. Can't find any info on what that Print Selection Bar is for.

Ok here is what you do,

1) have your dock system preferences set to autohide dock.

2) download OnyX ...in it there is a setting for the dock to decrease the response time (i.e dock appears faster when you hover down).

3) download BetterTouchTool...enable window snapping

4) set up your window snapping (I have mine set so when i click and drag a window to the top of my screen it maximizes the screen--without fullscreening so you can still see the menubar).

5) Enjoy!! sry for all of the A**Holes on here who cannot understand your question.

P.S Bettertouchtool is a must have for new mac users...makes the trackpad like 1000times better.

i agree, i was annoyed as well and was looking thru the settings to at least give you the option, it however does not. i found a nice work around, its not "FSM" but it fills up the entire screen minus the dock on the bottom and the menu bar at the top via "windows 7 esque" snapping.

plus the multi touch gestures (to make finger consistent with the rest of apples software.... bizarre that two fingers to the left doesn't go 'back"). just got this macbook air a week ago! loving it so far minus a few small annoyances

I'm not a new Mac user, I've had a MacBook for 3 years. But I just got a 27 inch iMac. I love everything about it so far, except for one thing-- whenever I entere full screen mode, the menu bar disappears. My habit is to glance up at the corner of the screen to check the time (or date), usually while typing. But I can't do this in FSM-- I have to stop what I'm in the middle of typing, grab the mouse, and scroll up over the top of the screen to reveal the menu bar. This might seem like a trivial thing, and my complaint may seem petty, but like other users on here with the same frustration, I am in disbelief that you cannot always display date and time, regardless of what mode the screen is in, and it is quite inconvenient. So, 8 or 9 months after the original poster asked about this issue, I am sorry to report it has not been fixed.

By the way, I, too, was shocked by how the original question (the very one I was seeking an answer to) was ignored and how the original poster was treated. Had this been my first trip to this forum as a new Mac user, I would feel like returning my Mac to the store and swearing off Apple forever. Surely, one hopes this is not the typical experience. I really can't understand the animosity between Mac and PC users and the elitism that I sometimes see. What's the deal people?

I love Apple products, and my new iMac is awesome, but it would be nice to see this menu bar issue fixed.

I too find it a bit annoying that you can't lock the menu bar in FSM. I understand the "by design" explanation but it would be nice to have the option to lock it.

I'm persisting with the "auto-hide and show the dock" option and stretching the screen out. So thanks for the helpful tips in the last few pages.

I nearly stopped on the first page due to "help" given. Extremely arrogant responses to an honest question from a new mac user. They clearly didn't understand the question.

Well, I did find something of a semi-fix, and it may have already been mentioned somewhere in this discussion. Command + space bar opens the Spotlight toolbar which also happens to reveal the menu bar. Both Spotlight and the menu bar will remain in view. But Spotlight is expecting you to type something into its search field, so that when you resume typing in whatever you're doing (e-mail, Pages, etc.) you will actually be typing into the Spotlight search field. To get back to typing in your document, you have to close the Spotlight toolbar, which then also hides the menu bar. Ugh! So, if you just want a quick menu bar check without having to remove your fingers from the keyboard, command + space bar will do the trick, but it won't stay there permanently.

As far as I can tell-- and I've looked all over the internet plus in some reference manuals-- there is no way to permanently reveal the menu bar in full screen mode. We can only hope that Apple will have an update for this soon.
