need help please...I switched to a new hard drive and i am trying to transfer my info from old hard drive that is on an external and i am stuck . The guy at the genius bar said it would be easy ?? Where do I start?

That can be done, but you'll end up with an extra user account and the transferred account(s) may lose permission to see the backups. See the blue and pink boxes in Problems after using Migration Assistant.
The Full System Restore per my earlier post will restore everything just as it was when you did the backup.

On the page where you "Select your Sytem"
I only see Macintosh HD
and not my external

Those are actually the backups of your system, not your internal HD.
