Display has small vertical lines (in finder)

um...i just restarted my computer and now all the lines are gone....=.=

Sorry to chime in so late on this, I've had a busy evening.

It's the graphics processor chip going bad. My lines covered the whole screen, not just the Menu Bar and Popup Windows. I ran into this last week, see my thread here:

I took my G5 iMac into the Apple Genius Bar two nights ago.

Don't bother calling Apple for replacement original disks, they don't have them. Been there - done that.

FatewheelC, my problem went away and came back, and never left. Don't count on it lasting too long.

I'm just waiting until next month at this point. If I've got to replace it, it's going to be with the newest iMac.

Is your MacBook only a year old as in, it's an Intel-based MacBookPro, or is it an older MacBook you've had for a year? If it's a new Intel-based Mac, I'd take it to an Apple Genius Bar, and sweet talk the Manager.

It was about four or five days between the first and final time. My issue is the Graphics Card. The computer still works fine, it's just hard to read through the lines. When I restart the computer and blue screen appears, its clear for about 1-2 seconds, the the graphics card boots up and - BINGO! - the lines return.

My capacitors were okay, but they are often the cause of items like this.

Mine was an iMac G5 ALS (mid 2005), and considered obsolete by Apple, so Apple won't work on it. The Genius Bar gave me a list of local electronics repair places, that might do the work, if a ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card could be found (which if found would be used, and how long would it last?). Because of the amount of labor involved in removing and installing the card, labor costs would likely be near $500.

Even though $500 is cheaper that $1299, I don't want to invest that much into it.

If your machine is under a year old, buy the AppleCare extension plan.

If your machine is just over a year old, you may still be able to get it, but your mileage may vary.

Sometimes, some machines get under an exchange repair program that extends the warranty for certain items which lack of AppleCare coverage means you still won't get charged. But that is rare, and you can check

The LCDs can get funny lines because of inverter board, inverter cable, graphics chip, or RAM issues. Fans cooling the graphics processor if they fail can cause problems. RAM issues can even extend to the hard drive itself because the graphics system uses hard drive swapfiles on some Macs. If you drop your Mac, or it falls to the floor, it likely won't be covered, unless you have good homeowner insurance or computer insurance such as Safeware.

The iMac G5 had the additonal notorious distinction as one of two Macs that had capacitor leaking, which was covered by an exchange program to replace the power supply. The eMac was the other. Certain Dells also had issues with it at the time. Sadly that exchange program is long gone, and your odds of finding someone who will repair it are slim.
