Seems both ports have stopped working; is there a solution?

I have had a USB hub attached that I have used since I got this Macbook Pro. Today I noticed that Time Machine, which is connected thru the hub, was not working. Then I attempted to get a file off a memory stick thru the hub, but that didn't work. So I plugged 2 different memory sticks into each of the USB ports directly on the MacBook and neither is recognized, nor is my iPhone. So there is definitely a problem with the ports.

But how can both go bad at the same time? And is there a software upgrade the killed the ports and is there one to fix it? I am using Ver 10.6.8 with 2.53 GHz processor and 4 GB of DDR3 memory.

Thanx for any and all help.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Have you reset the SMC and PRAM?

SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

PRAM:

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.
