Yes I named it admin-is that a bad idea? It was my partners idea.

I think it is. There's already a system group called "admin". And while it won't be confused with an owner named "admin" it can be a bit confusing to the human reader.

Which reminds me: I never named my drive when I first got it, now there's blank beside it under the devices menu-is there a way to name it? I see that the drive itself is called Server HD and the other partition is called Macintosh HD2, but the mac mini itself is blank. Thanks again!

Not sure I understand. You can rename the mounted volumes from the finder just by clicking on the name on the finder desktop (assuming you have Finder preference general show items set). But at this point I woudn't advise it since you don't know what data is explicitly referencing the pathname to files on those volumes. Renaming your boot volume however should pose no problems.

I am facing this similar problem and found this post. I read through it all and am certain that this is the exact problem with my mac. I did as you said and was real optimistic finding it solved the problem 3 years back. However my mac is not responding as I hoped the error still remains and can't seem to solve it. Can you help?

The only issue that I had was a missing piece of punctuation with this string.

Once I made a slight change to the argument, it worked perfectly (rather than go through the tons of additional strings the other person had to do which others may. I dunno)

This was what I did...

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0; killall -9 Finder

I did it as one string. The ONLY change is the semi-colon after the Zero and before the killall.

Worked like I charm and I now have folders which don't put my brain in troubleshooting mode....a good thing.

Converting to a single line command with the semicolon made it work for me. Love it if I knew why.
