My Macbook Pro keeps freezing. Help!

Hi, I have a macbook pro mid 2010 model running OS X Lion 10.7.4 with 8GB of RAM (3rd party upgrade), 128 SSD. Up until about 3 weeks ago everything was running fine. Then one day the mac just froze and it's been doing it ever since on an irregular basis. Some days it will happen 10 times in one day, then it won't happen for 3 days.

Symptoms:

- The mac will freeze completely, no mouse, trackpad or keyboard input, if itunes is playing a song it will just hang and repeat the last 1/2 second of the song like a broken record. The only way out of this state is to do a hard reset.

- Occasionally I get some screen on startup that says I must hold down the power button to restart. It says this in about 5 different languages.

- Occasionally starting up the mac gets to the grey screen then doesn't move. Again I must do a hard reset.

Attempted Fixes:

- Booting up in safe mode does not fix the issue. It sometimes freezes in safe mode, or gets stuck on the grey screen.

- Apple Hardware Test - No issues found after running 3 times in extended mode.

- Verified/Repaired disks - Problem remains.

- Restored from a time machine backup. I didn't expect this to fix it, and it didn't.

If anyone has any ideas on what could be causing the issue, or any way to figure it out I am all ears.

Thanks,

Graham

What are you talking about? I started this thread in May.

Anyway, Apple checks the hardware for free. You only pay money if they have to fix something, so your best bet is to take it to them to scan the thing for faults. It's a lot faster than waiting for the magical thread to tell you how to fix it. Or even worse, wait for Apple to admit their latest OS causes a freeze. Believe me, I've been there. It ain't goin to happen dude.

Are you running the machine on Wifi all the time?

Try connecting to via ethernet (tha means sitting next to an ethernet port - not preferable), just to see if this makes any difference. I've seen some posts and reada couple of articles about ML hanging Applications due to a Wifi issue.

I am no trying it out. Please let me know if this helps.

Cheers,

Listen up people, take you mbp to apple tell them its problem TS4088 they will test the the graphic card and motherboard. Test takes about 30 minutes may or may not find any issue on the first try tell them to check it again if the test fails insit because if the test passes then it is a chipset issue covered by Apple on mid 2010 MBP's. Then pray it wont take 8-11 days to fix.

I turned on Wifi and apps all hung.

I forced shut the MBP and rebooted. Turned Wifi off and proceeeded to remove internetconfig.plist files and internetconfigpriv.plist files.

I found internetconfigpriv.plist with extra characters added:

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.0Bh7Jyh

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.7fomeqs

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.7mnxyBl

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.DJ4KXiC

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.DNw23tP

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.f6VG9ET

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.lockfile

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.oRf6OQH

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.SwIP3tp

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.upPOH9O

file://localhost/Users/user/.Trash/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist.YrxEFqB

I removed my user of course. But these files were a little weird. My Wifi connection seemes to have settled since removing these.

Okay, I got my logic board replaced today and to the service center's surprise the machine wouldn't boot still! when they changed the SSD with an apple hdd it booted fine. they tried several different apple hdds, it booted fine each time. so it seels the issue was with my ssd. i took a decision to install mountain lion in my original hdd and see if it worked. note, before the logic board change neither of then worked.

when i can home i removed the ssd and put it in my external usb sata 2 case. i tried to boot it from the usb drive to just see if it worked there, before going on installing my bundled hdd and installing ml in it. miraculouslyit worked!!!!

now i also have the bundled hdd installed in my machine and ml running on it. there has been no problem. i'll check this for a few days and also check the ssd via usb.

Same problm here with the Mountain Lion10.8.1. Everything was working fine until recently about 2 days ago, after every restart it simply freezes within 10 secs tops. Sometimes it freezes with the apple icon while trying to restart, sometimes I only get the white screen with no apple logo and sometimes the apple logo wud disappear depicting that it is not able to display the apple icon. Everytime I have to hard reboot. I have not had the chance to take a backup of my Mac. But I cannot let this data go away. Anychance anyone can help ?

I recently went to the Apple store to get my DVD drive fixed and unfortunately now I do not even have the warranty. My mac is a mid-2009 Macbook Pro.

Please need real urgent help. I am stuck and need my laptop for all my work.

I want to confirm what CarbonMac said above. I just updated to 10.8.1 and today I have the exact SAME problem. My MBP would not let me log in, it's stuck with the SBBOD at the login screen. Sometimes it lets me in, but then it freezes right away. However, I can log in in Safe Boot. So I'm currently backing up my files via time machine.

I have tried just about everything that I found online regarding to SBBOD. Nothing worked. I even reinstall my OSX.

I do have SSD, Crucial M4 to be exact. I updated its firmware because I read somewhere that it has been a cause for some SBBOD, but that did not work either.

I'm currently abroad overseas, and I am out of idea. Any help? I do have my original HDD with me, I might have to switch back for the time being.
