Safari is opening many duplicate windows of a URL--out of control!

Suddenly, Safari explodes with duplicate window and/or tabs for a single URL. If I click on a tab, I get the message that tabs must be closed to go to a new page. I approve this action, the windows disappear, only to have the next page appear with another pile of duplicates.

Is this a virus? If so, is there a downloadable software solution?

Thanks for any help.

This problem has been bugging me since Lion, and none of the responses were helpful. So I thought about it and realized that there had to be two different mechanisms operating which were restoring the state of Safari, resulting in duplication of every window (exponentially with multiple restarts). So I started digging through Safari preferences and found an extension called "Restore Safari", which has probably been there for years. I clicked on "uninstall" for that extension, and the problem is now fixed!
