How can i turn my new iPad into a wifi hotspot?

I have bought the new iPad, or the iPad 3, as many call it. My question is that since Apple has claimed that the wifi + 4g model is capable of becoming a wifi hotspot, i would like to know that how can i activate this option in the settings. A swift response would be very much appreciated.

iPad 2, iOS 5.1

Hi Jyotirmoy,

I too have an iPad 3 and by default the Personal Hotspot feature was hidden. To activate it, all you have to do is fill in the APN setting under 'Mobile Data'. That is:

Settings->Mobile Data->Internet Tethering (Fill in the same APN data here as you have in the 'Mobile Data' section right above it).

For example, I use Airtel and I have airtelgprs.com as APN in both Mobile Data and Internet Tethering fields. Username and password is blank for both. You'll have to use Vodafone India's APN.

Once done, the personal Hotspot icon will show up right below WiFi in Settings (at number 3). It has nothing to do with AT&T or Verizon as far as I know. If this doesn't work then Vodafone India could be blocking it intentionally (they have done so with the iPhone data in the Delhi circle before so you never know).

Hope this helps and it works for you! All the best!

Thanks Ahmer!

I had an extra problem after doing everything you said: I was getting the Personal Hotspot option under Settings> Cellular Data but with a "data loading" graphic going round and round next to it. Also none of the other options within Personal Hotspot were opening up.

It turns out I had Onavo Extend app installed (perviously) which had installed a profile which just needed to be uninstalled and everything worked fine after this.

Hi bskumar,

Have you updated to iOS 6.0.1? If you have then Personal Hotspot should now be visible in Settings by default. If you still can't see it, then please update the APN settings under cellular data (eg: for airtel, APN is airteelgprs.com and Username and Password are blank).

After updating to iOS 6, I didn't need the APN settings for Personal Hotspot so the above mentioned work should not be required after an update.

Hi,

Just to let you know that it's nothing about carrier's restrictions, unless you are in US.

The iPad comes with 2 anthena types:

1-Wi-Fi only

2-Wi-Fi + Cellular (3G/4G)

All iPads come with Wi-Fi built in, even the first models. What you need is an iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular (3G/4G) model.

If Wi-Fi only you can only connect to the internet via Wi-Fi networks and you not able to use hotspot. This may be the cause of some people here not being able to see the Hotspot option...

If Wi-Fi + Cellular (3G/4G) meaning that you can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or a cellular signal (just like cell phones). You just need a SIM card.

The physical difference between the two of them its a black plastic strip at the top edge of the iPad. If its a Wi-Fi + Cellular (3G/4G) it will have it. If the iPad is Wi-Fi only doesn't have this black plastic strip.

Using Hotspot, you can connect just your iPad or you can connect up to five other devices through the iPad. These other devices share the iPad's cellular connection and data plan. But keep in mind that you will consume your data plan more quickly (unless you have unlimited plan) and you may notice slower connection speeds with multiple devices.

Here are the steps to turn on your personal Hotspot and it really works, unless you have an iPad Wi-Fi only.

1-Insert carrier's SIM card in the slot

2-Go to Settings

3-Go to Cellular Data

4-Make sure Cellular Data button is ON. If not just do it.

5-At the Cellular Data menu, Go to APN Settings

6-Now you have 3 boards: Cellular Data, LTE Setup (optional) and Internet Tethering

7-Fill the APN in the Internet Tethering with exactly the same APN wich is in Cellular Data

ex:

Cellular Data APN - gprs.qtel

Internet Tethering APN - gprs.qtel

(No need username or password)

8-Go back to Settings menu. Now at the Settings menu you are able to see an extra setting that wasnt there before called Personal Hotsopt (just between the Bluetootth and Cellular Data menu) called Personal Hotspot.

9-Go to Personal Hotspot

10-Turn ON the Personal Hotspot button.

11-Choose an Wi-Fi password. Notice that you have to look for your shared network using Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth under the name of your iPad. ex: in my case is PurpleSoul

I hope I've clarified all doubts for you and all others iPad users facing this issue(like me before).

Cheers.
