Thanks, that along with the other tip above solved the problem. It's working now.
Hi...Am new to iMac...just read your post...when I get to substitutions the text replacement option is greyed out? 😟
You need to have a compose window open for a new message for the Text Replacement option to be available.
Matt
Thanks!!! Finally got there...it was already checked 😟 Why doesn't my mail make these faces when I type the symbols?
As explained elsewhere in this thread, you've got to set up the substitiutions yourself.

Thank you, Matt...I finally got it figured out...I am loving this new iMac after too many years on a PC!!! Thanks again for your help 🙂
All the fixes in this thread are to add Emoji emoticons. However, anyone not on a Mac can't see them. I want to use the standard emoticons that everyone can see (for instance: by typing colon, hyphen, close parentheses). Is there ANY way to do that?
Matt, can you help in answering Carolewalsh's question ablve. i have the same one. My grandkids have PC's and I want to include emoticons in my emails to them. Is there a way to do that from Mac to PC??
If you're running Maverick OS X 10.9 you can bring up the emoji (emoticon) window by typing control-command-space.
Not sure how they'll come through on the PC end.
Matt
They don't show up on PCs.
As Carole says, they don't show up on PC's. That's the issue. Are there no other emoticons available through MAC that will show up on PCs????
I have no idea.
I have as little to do with Windows PCs as possible.
Matt
OK, so i guess i call the local Apple store and see if any of their techs can come up with a way to make it happen. Thanks!
Let us know if you find anything out, Sue.
Thanks.
Hi Carole, what i found out is that the PC people need to download a free app that allows them to see the emoji signs. i called Apple and got their tech person out in Kansas and he was very helpful. here is a safe link with the free download that the PC friends in your circle need to use to see emoji's. Silly, but at least there is a way to make it happen.
I'll be sending the same to my grandkids and daughters.(if you want to see what other options there are just type into your search engine the 3 words: emoji software pc and the list will pop up. i asked the apple person which can we trust and he said cnet is fine.
Good luck!!
Sue
