Black bars when AirPlay Mirroring

I have an LH 55" TV that I've connected my 3rd Gen AppleTV to via HDMI. I have the resolution set at "Auto" which sets it to full 1080p - 60hz. When I view anything on the AppleTV it takes up the full screen real estate. However, when I mirror almost anything other than a video, I get black bars around the edges. This is wasted space.

It makes sense if there were black bars on the right and left because of the mismatched resolution. However, there are bars at the top and bottom too.

I have searched numerous forums and found nothing on this.

I am using an iPad 2.

Any ideas?

On your Apple TV, ave you tried going into Settings > Audio & Video > Adjust for AirPlay Overscan and turning it off? That was my issue.

Basically, some TVs will crop portions of the screen, so you can turn overscan adjustment on to force it to zoom out and be windowboxed (i.e. surrounded on all sides by black borders). For some reason Apple TV knows what to do with streaming video but not with mirrored desktops and the like.
