How can I tell if a security update is genuine?

Hi Macs,

I just received a Security Update notification and because of all the recent hoo-ha about malware/Adobe Flash Player, I'm unsure about downloading these two items. This is mainly because I've not received these before:

Flashback Removal Security Update

Leopard Security Update 2012

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

If that notification came via Software Update it is from Apple and genuine - in fact very important.

If you received them by other means, please say how.

So I suppose the moral of the story is uninstall before updating if you want to cover all bases -- seems like taking your umbrella with you even on a sunny day with no rain in the forecast. Or, uninstall after if there are problems. I guess for those who wouldn't know that a Flash update might be problematic, however small the chances, the first option may be the best. Bob's your uncle.

Er...hello? Me again. So, I've installed Flash Player - it's on my desktop and shows in Finder as a device. I tried to move it to the dock but it's not having any of it. Perhaps I've not completely installed it? (although it is working - I can watch BBC stuff etc).

Oh, and could you please speak very slowly - I didn't understand much of your discussions, interesting though they were to eavesdrop. I'm just an technophobe from little old England.

Cheers.

Are you sure?

it's on my desktop and shows in Finder as a device.

That sounds like the FlashPlayer.dmg file that you downloaded from the web and then mounted on your desktop. It should have shown up as a window in the Finder with the installer and an uninstaller. Did you double-click the installer and follow those directions? If so then you are finished with that thing you see as a device and need to click the little eject icon to the right of the title to dismount it. Once you have done that then you can throw that file in the trash to get it out of the way.

I tried to move it to the dock but it's not having any of it. Perhaps I've not completely installed it? (although it is working - I can watch BBC stuff etc).

You don't want to have it in the dock. It isn't an application, just an add on to your browser hidden away where you never have to worry about it. If it's working then it sounds like you have installed it.

Do yourself a favor and either go to the Apple Store for some free basic familiarization classes or join a local Macintosh User Group. It's a lot easier to explain this kind of thing hands-on than by coming here every time you have a question and I promise it will be a good experience for you.
