You need 1 GB RAM and 5 GB space on the HDD. 7GB if you install developer tools.

Giving just the basics, first you need to confirm that your iMac will run 10.6. See:
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Then you need to confirm that your applications and peripherals will run under 10.6 or that they can be upgraded to do so.
Finally, you need to purchase a retail copy of 10.6. See:

Apple has never made Snow Leopard available for download. You will need to buy the retail disk package.
