I can't activate (or find) magnetic timeline in FCPX

Hi,

I have watched the tutorials showing the magnetic timeline. It shows the little symbol that indicates dragging, but it the tutorial it also shows a little rectacngle thing just under the drag symbol. Forgive my lack of knowing what the technical names for those little symbols are.

Anyway, I don't have the little rectangle box. It also states that you can just select a clip and drag it to another place on the timeline. It shows the other clips moving to make space for the dragged clip. Mine don't make room. The clips just move up above the original timeline.

Oh, I am just using the trial version at the moment to make sure I can actually use it effectively, so maybe that feature is not in the trial version?????

Please help...

Only storylines are magnetic. The primary storyline, the dark bar down the middle, is magnetic. Connected clips move out of the way for each other, which is what you're seeing when the clips move up and down. You can combine the connected clips into a secondary storyline and then they will also have magnetic behavior that lets you re-arrange clips.

Well Somanna I didn't know about the possibility of gaps in the secondary storyline, and now hopefully knowing about them I can potentialy create a smoother clip without losing a theme in the primary storyline.

Thanks Ian for suggesting Tom's book. I have ordered one, although I have not used iMovie or Final Cut Express. Hopefully I can still understand it all.

And thanks Tom for the book although you really should tell people about it! 🙂

I will look at the Izzy video and hopefully learn a heap more. I am extremely green to this.

I am also a singer songwriter and while I am a reasonable soundie, I have never tried to make my own film clip before. This is what I will be using it for, so syncing words and movement to the sound clip is probably going to be my biggest challenge. If there are any videos or training sites or books you guys can suggest that are specific to music clips, I would be very grateful.

Somanna your music is very nice!

Hello MerryKerry,

Hope you like this new input to you name. If not,

Hello Keerynfromvic,

Glad to know that you are a singer songwriter. I feel it is the versatility of FCPX that allows beginners too, with same knowledgeable guidance, to bring out acceptable outputs.

Better to always remain 'green' in this field. Better it is to start making videos than spend endless hours studying how to make them!

I too am looking towards the helpful members in these forums for guidance in critical areas of editing. I propose to delink the need for having lyrics match lip movements so that editing would be easier and dubbing to other languages will not be difficult. To do so you have to plan the video scenes accordingly.

Glad for liking the music.

Could you send some works of yours, one or two of them, to my mail ID which is given at the end of the video? i.e. if you do not mind it.

Regards and all the best.

Thanks Somanna and yes you may call me MerryKerry!

I hear what you are saying about not syncing to make it easier when translated, but the clip I am working on, it is essential.

Thanks you for being interested in what I do, but don't really have anything as such to send you. I have several clips on YouTube but none of them have any real editing work, other than the 2 by Humane Research Australia where my songs feature in the background. There is also one there that I created in power point then converted for youtube. The link is:

My song features in this clip.

The one I am working on now is my first real Mac project and first production for TV.

Enjoy!
