My iPad screen cracked on its own. Others have this happen? Covered under standard warranty?

I have an ipad 3 that is two months from the date of purchase tomorrow. I have it in a sturdy front/back case. Today, in my air conditioned house, I was reading news on the ipad when before my eyes the screen cracked.

I have bought apple care + but it irritates me that I must pay $49 (and use one of my 2 covered incidents) when I don't feel I did anything wrong.

I spoke with Applecare and they told me that it's not covered. I asked if they never have any design or mfg errors? It's always user error? They said it's not covered but I could bring it to an apple store and if they agree that it was a mfg flaw (and how do I convince them of that?) then it MAY be covered.

Very disappointed Apple customer. I realize some people would lie so it's hard to separate what's covered and what's not. At the same time, thank goodness I bought Applecare. Otherwise, I've owned this product for just shy of 2 months and watched the glass crack before my eyes while reading the news and their response is pretty much "tough luck."

Anyone else had this? Gotten it covered under the standard warranty rather than applecare?

Thanks.

this is a far fetched response by me but here it goes. The new iPad gets VERY hot due to its huge battery, maybe the screen went into shock with the AC and the Heat from the battery. 😮

I went to the apple store and they were great. They said because it was a hairline crack with no sign of something smashing on it, where it would be shattered. I backed up my iPad to the cloud and was promptly given a brand new iPad. They loaded it with all of my stuff! I love apple! If the crack truly happens out of nowhere they will replace it. By the way my cost was $0.00!

Hello

I have just read your experience with Apple regarding the cracked screen with interest. I looked on here just to see if anyone had suffered a similar fate as myself and it has been enlightening. I too have suffered a shattered I pad screen and when I rang to ask for it to be sorted under warranty, the Apple rep actually said to me " so you have dropped the iPad and as a result the screen has broken" obviously I have not dropped the iPad and it has not been mal treated, I fact quite the opposite as it is my first Apple product and it has been "pampered". The suggestion by Apple was that the screen does not "just shatter" so it must be "accidental damage". Not. I have been advised to take it to a proper Apple store so they can inspect the iPad and make their conclusions from there so it will be an interesting visit it may seem! ( as long as I can get an appointment )!

Thank you all for your stories as can relate these to the "Apple Genius" when I get to see him and he tries to tell me that this sort of thing just does not happen!

My iPad screen too cracked before my very eyes. I made a genius appointment the next day only to be told I must have dropped it by the technician. Explaining this wasn't the case I asked for my complaint to be escalated to the manager. Manager comes out and tells me that I must ave dropped it. I reply that no I didn't drop it and if you look at this forum you will see that it is a common problem. He refuses to replace it but will sell me another one for $300. I ask for my complaint to be escalated and the store manager (chadstone vic Melbourne Australia ). Once again he tells me that the cracks are consistent with a drop. I explain that this isn't t he case. He refuses to answer my question of how many of these a week does he see. He refuses to look at the web site to see the other complaints. I offer to sign a stat dec that I didn't drop it. He refuses this. I ask to escalate it further he gives me a number to call. I ask for the names or staff numbers of all the people I had spoken to in the store and he refuses to give me the previous to names. I ask about coverage under Australian consumer law, as it is my belief that the product sold was faulty and should be replace. Certainly we can do that if you pay $300. Not happy Jan

Had the same problem! Bought me ipad mini 10 days ago and while i was away to the cinema, the screen got cracked (could not be anyone because my room was locked). I went to my local apple store to report this hoping for a replacement, however they were accusing me for dropping the ipad onto the floor. I was mad and argued with them but they were only telling me to pay for a new replacement costing £209 =.=. First Apple product, not going to get another one. Very Bad customer service. Local store was in Leeds btw.

Hello all, thought I would provide an update on my experience. After trying to contact apple in a professional and reasonable manner, they simply said I was lying. In the end I gave up and took my ipad to a non apple repair place and had it replaced with an apple part. For anyone in Melbourne Australia it was just off toorak rd south yarra. Cost approx $130 and they gave a 12 month warranty on the new screen. They were great and told me ( for what it is worth) that if I had to take my ipad to apple simply don't tell them about the screen as they wouldn't be able to tell.) so far it has been working like a dream.

Hey everyone,

Just experienced the same problem..my ipad was literally right next to me and it was fine. Looked away for a moment and looked back and it was cracked:/? Like ***? How does that even happen? It looks as if someone stood on it. Im so confused as to how this could even happen? No i didnt step on it and no i didnt just miss it and saw it now. My only theory for this is that it could have been stood on awhile ago and has only just shattered/cracked now if that even makes sense. By the looks of everyones comments, i have no chance and getting my ipad fixed under warranty.

Same thing here, ipad mini was on my desk, and suddently a big crack in diagonal 😟. Nevel fell, just happened spontanesously. I suspect it is a defect in the glass, like a dirt particle, as i had a similar problem on my wood stove a few years back ( window cracked, vendor explained to me that it was because the glass was not pure enough and had a "sand" particle in it ). Temperature variation would explain the crack. Any way in my case it's no biggy, since it's a "useless" device, i just use it for development.

ME TOO! I can't believe it! I have my iPad since November no issue at all then tonight...it happened.

I lied in my bed - finished to work on my computer - grab my iPad to sync it & felt that the screen was strange.

With the dim light of the laptop - I looked into it & yes, it was cracked with no reason at all.

Two minutes before it was resting on my bed - next to me. Nothing - all good.

I don't get it & I had to double check in a correct light to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

I'm sure it was correct before as I was playing to the Sims & believe me when they make the toast you have to check on them every minute.

I am gutted & upset about the cracks. I really don't understand.

The only thing is, it's when it happened I had an electrical heater on in the room... - Could the iPad be that sensitive to the heat? Seriously? 😕

My iPad screen cracked on its own. Others have this happen? Covered under standard warranty?
