Photos not saving to camera roll

I've run into a situation where the photos taken by the camera app are not saving to the camera roll, however strangely, the photos are still visible through the review mode in the actual camera app, and also when plugged into pc they are visible in the photos folder? Additionally, they are still visible by location under the places tab in the photos app, which suggests they are definitely there. I can still remove them from the iPhone but still have the issue of not being able to edit or view actually on the iPhone. What should I do? Using 4s on 5.1.1.

I've just fixed my Camera roll problem. OK there's a "bad quality" video on youtube that shows how to do this but to save us time kindly follow the instructions as below (I'm using an iPhone 4 on iOS 5.1.1):

Download MOBILE TERMINAL

Start the app: on the prompt (~mobile$) type : su root <HIT RETURN>

Password: alpine <HIT RETURN>

type (exactly as it appears): cd /var/mobile/Media <HIT RETURN>

then type: chown -R mobile DCIM <HIT RETURN>

There you go.. sorted! Take a picture and thats it, enjoy

**provided you haven't deleted any picture folders previously, you should be able to see all pictures taken in the past. Hope it helps

I've just got the iPhone 5 with IOS6, restored from iCloud (backup of my iPhone 4) and camera roll was not saving anything photos or videos. I restored to factory settings without using the backup and it still didn't work. Tried resetting a couple of times, still didn't work. In the end I restored from iCloud again, downloaded diskaid, went to File System -> Media -> DCIM and there were no folders to delete so I created a 100APPLE folder and it started working. 🙂 Happy Days....

I had the same issue. I went to an "apple genius" at the Georgetown store in Washington DC and they fixed the problem. The solution was erasing all the contents of my iPhone 5 and loading it up with the store's copy of iOS6. Took a long time, but finally I am able to take photos and see them in camera roll. This means there must have been an issue with the iOS6 loaded on the phones at the factory.

This is virtually always caused by placing the files in with the wrong permissions. Diskaid may show the owner as mobile but if you look in ifile, ssh, or terminal you'll see it's owned by root.

Doing as JideSamuel says will fix the problem, without having to delete all your photos. You could also use iFile from the device, change owner of DCIM to mobile, and check apply hierarchically

I created this account just to say THANK YOU "benhefron"! If you're like me and have tried the SBSettings fix dir, delete PhotoData folders using iTools (or something similar), or any other 'fixes', this actually WORKS.

Download iFile -> var/mobile/DCIM -> tap the little blue arrow -> change owner of DCIM folder to 'mobile' -> toggle apply hierarchically to 'ON' -> go take a photo and it will pop up in the Camera Roll.

Hi benhefron,

I have the same problem with most of you here. I take a photo using the camera, it only shows in the 'Preview' of the Camera app, it doesn't go straight to the Camera Roll. So, I tried what you said earlier:

"Download iFile -> var/mobile/DCIM -> tap the little blue arrow -> change owner of DCIM folder to 'mobile' -> toggle apply hierarchically to 'ON' "

After that, I checked again the permission of that folder "DCIM". The option of "apply hierarchically" changed back to 'OFF'.

Can you tell me what is wrong and how can I fix it?

Me, too. I have this problem. I'm on iOS 6.1.1. And don't works for me. 😟
