Warranty is restricted to the country of purchase?

When I opened the sealed box of my new iPhone 4s there were scratches on the front display and damages on the edge of the front screen. When I contacted Apple support they told me that I have no warranty coverage in Germany as I bought the Phone in the USA. What kind of international warranty handling is that??? In case I have technical problems I have to fly to Amerika to fix a problem which is caused by quality issues of apple??? Am really unhappy about the handling of my issue. This will have a negative influence on my decision making when it is coming to buy a new apple product. Can anybody confirm this warranty handling which is restricted to the country of purchase???

That's the risk you take when buying a product (any product) from another country, often the warranty is restricted to the country, or continent it was purchased in - either for logistical reasons or differences in the products sold in different areas.

Why didn't you check the item before leaving the US? Seems like a simple 30 second precaution to take.

If you had bought the iPhone in any EU country, your warranty would be valid EU wide.

Read the warranty here: http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/iphone-english.html

It would have behooved you to inspect the product before you left the store.

Your summary of the warranty coverage is false but, strangely, the essense is true for the iPhone and iPad. There IS warranty coverage in Germany. However, purchasers of the aforementioned products need to have warranty service performed in the country where the product was originally purchased. It has been mentioned several times on these forums, and is posted on the Apple website.

Warranty service for computers is not restricted to the country in which they were originally purchased.

This is news to me. I always though I had an international warranty. I travel a lot and sometimes s**t happens on the road. My 3GS was bought in HK and has been serviced in Beijing China and even totally replaced in Montreal, Canada. Actually there was an issue that they could not fix in Beijing and the store manager called me to apologize. Ha said i had an international warranty but they did not have what was required to fix my problem (I won't get in details but the phone are a bit different in China). Seems not to be possible anymore?

Not true??? Were you there? I know what I did. All they did was plug my phone in their laptop and confirm it was still under warranty. In two different countries other than where I bought it

In any case I always thought that a big plus of Apple was the international warranty. If it is no longer the case then it is a major bummer for me.

I have to agree with you on that one. The whole point of a mobile phone is to be able to use it on the move and that should not necessarily be restricted to one country through the terms of warranty coverage. I am sure that any person that travels for business and has ever had a phone problem during these travels would appreciate this, and if the warranty is not valid internationally, then this is something that people should take into account when deciding to buy an iphone.
