I keep hearing a "salt shaker" sound on my mac. It sounds like a "shake shake". What is that all about?

This weird sound has been going on for a long time on my computer. It sounds like the "shake shake" of a salt shaker. Has anyone ever heard of this. It was on my older Mac and when they transferred the information on to my new computer, it continued to make the sound. Thanks for your help.
