Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

The free space on Macintosh HD is larger than its capacity?

This pretty much sums it up:

My MacBook Pro has a 320 GB HD.

The "Get Info" window above reads: "Capacity: 319.21 GB"

That makes sense.

My question is why it says: "Available: 323.64 GB"

How could I have more space available than the size of my hard drive?

Thank you in advance,

James

Nothing at all is shown for space used. I suggest you unmount and remount the drive. If it still gives nonsensical output in the Info window, you should reformat it.

Did you use Daisy Disk in the "Scan as Administrator" mode? "Administrator" in this context means "root" (System Administrator), not your regular admin account. If you didn't, I would do so now, just to be sure that there are no permission issues that could prevent measurement of restricted items within .MobileBackups.

Looks to me like something in the Local Snapshots is damaged/corrupted, causing them to be measured about 120 GB too large by some of the functions.

(There's some variation, probably due to timing of the measurements, as snapshots are being made and deleted hourly.)

Yes, I suspect that turning them off, thus deleting them, will clear it up.

We have seen a few cases of damaged files that took some effort to get rid of. Once you turn Snapshots off, any leftovers may be counted in "Other" until they finally disappear.

So turn them off, and watch the displays for a while. You may have to Restart to clear it, or even use Terminal or an app running as root to delete the /.MobileBackups folder.

Good news! This worked!

After turning Time Machine off, the next time I booted up, I checked my displays and they are reading normally again:

Along with the two seen above, I also checked a finder window and a scan with DaisyDisk. All of these are showing the same thing now and everything makes sense!

Thank you Pondini and jsd2 for your quick, friendly, knowledgeable support!

It's reassuring to know that their are users like you guys out there!
