How do you open Word files with Lion?

I upgraded my operating system to Lion without realizing that it would instantly render all of my MS Office files for Mac useless. How do I resolve this? Do I need to downgrade my operating system to Snow Leopard or is there another way to get my files back and be back at work?

MacBook Pro, iOS 5.1.1

Have you tried opening Pages (latest version) and then going to File - selecting the docment - and then opening. It's worked for me so far .......
