How do I reset my MacBook Pro ip address?

Every time my new MacBook Pro is set to sleep, it is unable to joint the network once awaken. I get the message that another device on the network is using the computer ip address. How do I reset the computer address?

Routes usually assign "the next available" IP address to a system. If your system sleeps, and another systems joins the MBPs address may be seen as available. But you MBP has not been notified yet.

You could try "static routing" ... using the MAC (machine adress code, a long string of hex codes. This is the System Preferences > Network > Advanced for mine, with the ctual numbers blocked out, but the red box in the MAC:

Set your router to ALWAYS assign an address to this MAC, and nothing else should ever use it.

That depends on the router setup menus. I cannot even quite by heart recall where the menu is for mine. The web will have your router's user's manual if it was made with the last 10 years, if it is not Airport.

If it is AirportExtreme or Express, I can request this post be reloacated to the Airport forum to get the proper attention.

Or it seems you could start a new thread (usually discouraged to start two on the same subject, but this one seems to have passed "underneath the radar" for most). Just be sure to mention "static routing tables" in the title.

Do you actually have other devices on your network, e.g. other Macs, Windows/Linux PCs, iPhone/Android phone, iPad, etc... If not then your router may be unsecured and a neighbour is using your wi-fi router and hi-jacking your internet access! If that's the case then your priority should be to secure the router, then the problem will go away. If you do have other devices then it's a case of sensibly managing them to prevent two devices being assigned the same IP address, e.g. by assigning static IP addresses to each device, though that may not be a desirable thing to do if you take your MBP/iPad/iPhone to other networks, e.g. in a college, library, or cafe. A quick way to sort the problem you have is to open System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP and click on the 'Renew DHCP lease' button. If you have to do this persistently then you may want to look at implementing a more permanent solution.

I never considered "unsecured" -- nice catch Zyriab.

I have my wireless network setup this way:

Name is somethng non-obvious . "BillandJanie" matches your mailbox. "GETYOUROWN" or "ZyriabsFleaCircus" (😝) is not, at least if you are not Zyriab.

Wireless network password is obscure, like "x4U@q60*n", and change it every month. The router password is just as secure.

Use WPA2 if at all possible. WEP is easily crackable by most hackers these days.

By the way, you now have more attention. 😀
