My iPhone doesn't always ring, why?

I've had my iPhone 4S since it's introduction, I love it, except it doesn't always ring when I get a call. Yes, Airplane mode is off, the ringer is on. Take yesterday for instance, over a period of 5 hours, four calls didn't ring, 3 went to VoiceMail, one showed as a missed call, three other calls came through normally. During this entire time the phone was sitting on my desk, fully charged.

Has anyone else had this problem?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

That means your iPhone is in "Do Not Disturb" mode which will cause you to not be alerted when you get a notification (such as a phone call, message, Facebook/twitter notification).

To turn this on or off, go to:

Settings<Do Not Disturb<"ON" or "OFF"

You can also edit the times you want "Do Not Disturb" to be on by going to

Settings<Notifications<Do Not Disturb

Hope this helps

Update on my particular case, though YMMV, of course. I did all of the resets noted in my previous message, and then I discovered a day or so later that I was still missing calls. I called Apple tech support and spoke with a very nice fellow who suggested that I'd done all of the things (including a restore to factory settings I'd done earlier) they'd have advised and that perhaps this was a problem with a defective SIM card. I went to the AT&T store and easily had my SIM card replaced, but that didn't do it, either. Acting on advice from the Apple tech I had spoken with, I then made an appointment at the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store. Five minutes after I'd arrived for my appointment, I walked out with a brand-new iPhone. So far, so good! I haven't had any reports of people being unable to reach my iPhone, though it's only been a few days. 🙂 One further note: I did set up this new iPhone as new, rather than restoring it from a backup; I didn't want to take any chances.

My iphone does not always rings. I just realized since I had a phone interview today at 3:00pm. I waited 30minutes before with the phone in front of my face, and 2:51pm, there was a call from another person, I picked. Then I waited and waited, until 3:12pm, I thought something went wrong. There were missed calls and a voice messege displayed on my screen at 3:00pm. The phone never ring!!!!!!!!!!!

I Just missed a phone interview! OMG!

Could you give me a solution to solve this problem?????

There seems to be no clear answer for this continuing problem. I've talked to Apple, and while they've been attentive they haven't solved the problem. They suggested that the problem was a weak signal. I've talked to my carrier (Verizon) they seemed disinterested except for trying to sell me a $300 signal enhancer for my home. They poiinted fingers back to Apple. I would accept it as a signal problem except my wife has a non-Apple cheapo phone on the same network and her phone never fails to ring. My son and my daughterinlaw both have iPhones and experience the same problem on another carrier (AT&T)

It's very disconcerting to know you can't depend on your phone to ring, yet you get notice of a missed call and even VM. It just doesn't make sense.

If you find an answer please let us know!

Jack, I went through the same problem on AT&T. Apple replaced my iPhone 5 three times, I reset it back to factory settings a couple of times, and I can't remember all the other things I tried. However, it finally did come down to a reception problem in my home, which was the only place I was not receiving my calls. AT&T worked out a "deal" for me where I now have a microcell in my home and haven't missed any calls since getting it. The microcell was fairly expensive, but most of the cost of it was offset when they gave me a monthly discount for the next year and charged me the refurbished price for a new microcell. They were really very cooperative about the whole thing.

Got this from another site, but this is what was wrong with my iP5!!:

"1) If you look at the left side of the iPhone 5, you will see an indentation with a thin switch, and the two round volume buttons. If that switch is pushed to the back of the phone, an orange line will appear. That puts your phone on silent. Flipped to the front of the phone, it just looks black, and the phone is not on silent. We just realised that this is what happened to ours; it must've gotten flipped while in pocket.

2) The kicker is that when the silent button is on, there is no indication on the screen. No icon with the little bell with a slash through it; nothing to tell you that the phone has actually been put on silent. Not the best innovation. You will see the little slashed bell pop up when you turn the phone onto silent, but then it disappears, giving no clue why your phone that can find answers to all questions in the googleverse won't ring when you get a call."

I too have the same problem with Verizon and my second new iPhone 5. I talked them into a new phone even though 30 days had passed. During the entire time with both phones, I have received maybe 20% of my calls. If you look at this topic, there have been over 30,000 views, yet it doesn't appear that anyone is trying to fix this problem. When go to the local Verizon store, they blame it on everything but the phone. I can sit at my desk and call from my land line, and still get no answer. Two rings and straight to voicemail. If I could turn back the clock, I would certainly be using a Samsung phone or something other than the iPhone. The thrill is gone. I certainly hope someone will address this problem. I am very surprised that Apple and Verizon let this linger. With all the suggestions, I have found none to work, and I have tried them all. Let's keep trying to get some attention. I'm sure Steve would not be happy. Later.

Not an hour ago, I was sitting at my desk with my iPhone on a stand not two feet away from me, I got the VoiceMail sound, and sure enough my wife tried to call me, but the phone did not ring, yet her message went to Voice Mail. When I looked at the phone I had three bars showing. Why didn't it ring? Ten minutes later my Son called and viola, the phone rang loud and clear. This is nuts!

I've talked to Apple, and they have been very nice but they have offered no solution. Verizon wasn't very nice, and still offered no solution except to say told it was Apple's fault and I should buy a signal extender for over $300. Yeah right!

I ordered a 5 S several weeks ago I'll see how that works, then I'm going to get serious with both Apple and Verizon. Apple doesn't monitor this board (or so they claim) so what we say here falls on deaf ears. IF you are having this problem call, email, snail mail or whatever and let Apple know that this isn't a "delightful" experience.😠

Jackfrommontague,

I am having this same issue. Yes it is very frustrating. I am very curious to know if the new 5s will do this also. I absolutely hate droid and can't imagine giving up my iphone, but what good is it if it will not ring. I have replace the SIM card three times and I am on my 1st replacement. Problem is I had this phone since Nov 2012 and it work great until April 2013. When im at my office is when it happensand it mostly happens with my husband. He has a Casio Commando 3G phone and has no problem getting calls sitting right next to me. Now it seems know matter where I go I only have two to three bars where I used to have four or five. Please let me know how the 5S turns out.

Thanks!

Im happy to say the new 5S seems to work better. In the last two weeks I've only had one call go directly to VM without the phone ringing. That's still one too many but much better than the 4S. Right now in my home office the 5S is showing 4 bars, with the 4S I never got more than 2 bars and usually just one bar, in the same location. So I would say, at least for me, the problem is probably 95% solved. My daughterinlaw just got a 5S and she too is getting more reliable coverage.

I hopethe 5S solves your problem too. Good luck!

No, my iPhone is not in "Do Not Disturb" mode, or in "Airplane" mode. The "ringer" is set to on. The phone just refuses to ring normally at times. I will have a conversation, hang up, a few minutes or so later the phone will not ring while a new call will go directly to Voice Mail, emitting the usual notification sound. For some reason the phone simply will not ring at times. This has been a known problem with iPhones for the past several years. I'm not the only person with the problem.

I don't know if the problem is with the iPhone or the carrier. My carrier Verizon blamed Apple, Apple blamed Verizon. Verizon was kind enough to offer me a $300 signal booster, which I declined. Personally I think it's a combination of a poor signal (which varies from time to time for no apparent reason) and the inability of the iPhone to grab the signal properly (remember the antenna problem with the iPhone 4) . I will say, with the iPhone 5S, the problem seems to have been minimized at least for me.

At least a broken clock is right twice a day, a phone that doesn't ring is worthless.

My iPhone doesn't always ring, why?
