I cannot get Web Sharing to turn on.

Ever time I click the check box to turn on Web Sharing, the gray light blinks quick to orange, then turns back to gray. I try it over and over and still it will not turn on. I've read many other support discussions related to this and I have tried many of the "solutions", including:

  1. Changing the name of my computer, multiple times
  2. Replacing the existing httpd.conf file with the "original" httpd.conf file
  3. Commenting out LoadModule fastcgi_module libexec/apache2/mod_fastcgi.so from the httpd.conf file
  4. Starting apache in the terminal by typing sudo /usr/sbin/apachectl start
  5. Removing the lines <key>Disabled</key> <true/> from the
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist
  6. Removing old users from the /etc/apache2/users/ directory

Nothing has worked so far. I've redownloaded Lion hoping to be able to use the files contained within the installer package to restore all of the relevent files that might have become corrupted somehow. I haven't done this though because I don't know how.

When I try to start Web Sharing while Console is running I get the following message

I'm really, REALLY new to using terminal and playing around in the "Unix world". I grew up with GUI interfaces and never really had the opportunity to get down and dirty with the command line. So please forgive me for asking why I get the following error when I type in the recommended command.

chmod: /Users/Chris: No such file or directory

chmod: Denney/Sites: No such file or directory

And if you don't mind, any good books and/or resources for learning more about the terminal and the underbelly of OSX?

Go to System Preferences, Sharing, and look at your Mac's "Computer Name"...

First, if your Mac is named something like "Chris Denny's awesome Mac" then I would strongly suggest you renamed it to something significant, thought without any spaces or punctuation, otherwise you might find it challenging to somehow get your iPad to reach it using Safari.

Finally, let's pretend your Mac is named "theLittleMacThatCould", then just below the "Computer Name" field you should see some text that says something like: "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: theLittleMacThatCould.local"

That last part (which I emphasized in bold) is what you should type in Safari address bar. For example: http://thelittlemacthatcould.local/or perhaps http://thelittlemacthatcould.local/~Chris%20Denny

I cannot get Web Sharing to turn on.
