ONE OF THESE SHOULD WORK...

SOLUTION #1: EASIEST IF IT WORKS
no need to reset the iphone .. just close & restart the mail app (while in airplane mode) .. and it works .. thanks all! PS: Take it out of airplane mode when finished.
----------------------------------------------------
SOLUTION #2 WHICH DID NOT WORK FOR ME (BUT IT IS QUITE SIMILAR TO #2)
1) Put the iPhone in Airplane mode
2) Open the Mail app
3) Go to the Outbox
4) Click Edit, click the circle next to the stuck message to select it
5) Click Delete
6) Take the iPhone out of Airplane mode
7) Return to the Mail app. :-)
----------------------------------------------------
SOLUTION #3 WHICH WORKED FOR ME!!!
1) Put your iPhone/iPad in airplane mode
2) Fully switch-off your phone
3) Turn it back on
4) When prompted enter your access code, but don't unlock your SIM
5) Your iPhone/iPad is booted
6) Go to your mail app
7) Go to Outbox
8) You should be able to click on edit in the top-right corner
9) Click on the circle in front of your e-mail
10) Delete
---only for a PHONE ---
You can reactivate cellular and wifi data at this point, turning off airplane mode should prompt you to enter your sim.

I still have not got anything to work. But there is something I don't understand from Solution #3, number 4 about entering the access code but not unlocking the SIM. I don't know how to do this.

I have reinstalled my email account and am at the same gigantic storage level as when it was deleted. I can't believe this is taking so long to fix. Grrrrrrrr. LOL.

None of the answers helped me as I had two types of mail in my inbox;

1) red 'i' mails which I could delete in airplane mode

2) one spinning wheel email which I could not

Here's what I did to fix it;

a) switch on airplane mode

b) do a hard reboot (centre button an power switch together till the apple appears)

c) the phone should now start up in airplane mode still and the formerly spinning wheel mail will have a red 'i'

d) use the edit and delete function or swipe to red delete button and delete the mail

e) switch off airplane mode and you are done

In my case I suspect the email had an attachment that tipped it over "memory full" blocking the mail.

I have no space because after clearing down files iOS next update 'stole' the space and now harasses me daily with update request messages. The daily answer is NO until I see consensus that the upgrade works!

Do what Troy29 said to do. If the edit button is unavailable, double tap the home key, swipe the mail app closed, then repeat from step one.

Troy29:

I know this thread is a bit old, but just in case anyone finds it here is the solution:

1) Put the iPhone in Airplane mode

2) Open the Mail app

3) Go to the Outbox

4) Click Edit, click the circle next to the stuck message to select it

5) Click Delete

6) Take the iPhone out of Airplane mode

7) Return to the Mail app. :-)
