Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

The may update has Changed the sections button- now there is a + instead of a jigsaw: I can't figure out how to combine sections? All tutorials appear to relate to pre updated version. Can anyone help. Ty.

Hi. Forgot to say this relates to GarageBand for iPad. Running latest os

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

And again, you have to be careful with your statement and the improper terms you use. "MIDI Sections" are referred to as "MIDI Regions". This is the standard term used in virtually all DAWs. Using the term "MIDI section" is especially problematic in this context when discussing Song Sections.

In response to your statement:

MIDI Regions don't affect Song Sections. The management of Song Sections is done in the Song Sections popup window. The only exception is the when you set the last Section to "Automatic", then a Region that is currently recorded can extend the last Song Section when the Playhead reaches its end during recording.

Only you can manually reduce the number of Sections by deleting Sections or resize Song Sections in the Song Sections window. Joining existing MIDI Region across Song Section Border (when All Sections is selected) will NOT affect the existing Song Sections. The long MIDI Region will just span across multiple Song Sections.

Just to throw in another fact to be aware of. Song Sections will affect Regions (Audio and MIDI). If you shorten an existing Song Section, then all the MIDI and Audio Regions that fall into that range will be deleted! If you have one long Region that spanned across the Section border, then the Regions will be split first at the Section border and then the left Regions will be truncated. Of course, now you can re-join the MIDI Regions again (this is not possible with Audio Region, but that is whole different topic)

HI Caroline - if you do + then you can change (increase) section lengths. When GB does this, it replicates what was in the section into the new space. So you have to delete the replication and then copy in the material that you want to include in the section from the next section. If you have 8 bar sections and increase A from 8 to 16, and then move the B material into the expanded A, then you can delete B or do more rearranging. Note that you have to do this for every MIDI track, so it is better to plan ahead, usually by building on longer initial sections.

CAROLINE! Congratulations -- you may have stumbled on the answer we were all looking for! If you have multiple song sections from a single input source, the following order of operations just succeeded (for me, anyway) in combining them into a single, song-length section:

  • Select the + button at far upper right of screen
  • Section names will automatically fill the pop-up
  • Manually scroll to the TOP of the pop-up screen
  • Select "All Sections"
  • Tap anywhere outside the pop-up area to close it without further action (no "Add", no "Edit", etc.)
  • Select the instrument/source icon at far left of the screen (in my case, a guitar amp)
  • A pop-up with three command options will emerge: Select "Merge"
  • GB will then go about combining each section into a single, song-length, merged-track section

Have not yet experimented with how well a track assembled in the above fashion is available to then merge down with sections from other sources, but assume this will work as you'd expect.
