For light-duty use comparable to Publisher, In my opinion, Pages is a close competitor. It combines lightweight desktop Publishing with Very Good word processor features. And it is dirt cheap.
If you outgrow Pages, you may find that the leap to professional page layout is quite expensive. Adobe PageMaker and Quark XPress are the leaders there, with zillions of features most "regular" folks will never use.
Crank up Windows in a VM and continue to do what you know, just use VirutalBox 4.x for OS X and free copy of Windows 8 RC.
InDesign since at least CS2 is industry standard. Highly recommended.
CS2 was a terrible experience and that was 5-6 yrs ago and of course totally depended on Rosetta, on plugiin problems, and is not supported with 10.6.8 and won't run under Lion.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 looks like an alternative

That's why I used the word SINCE.
I use CS4 myself and will be upgrading to CS6 sometime. And I found InDesign fairly easy to learn.
