iBooks downloading multiples copy bug?

NEED HELP! Using the new iPad and when I open my library it was trying to download a book I'd previously purchased, read, and deleted. I tried to delete it before it fully downloaded but it would not allow it. Then, like the cascading windows error on PC's, more and more copies of this book appear in my library and it's growing exponentially (like the cascading windows tile analogy). It never fully downloads the book and will not allow me to delete. Now I've got 24 copies of Personal Foul trying to download and every time I close the program and reopen it has added more.

Can you help!?!?

-I'm running the most recent iOS and iBooks versions (5.1.1 and 2.1.1 respectively)

-The book that is attempting multiple copy downloads is a book I purchased a year ago on my first gen iPad. Upon upgrading to the 3rd gen iPad I did not sync that particular book and have set auto sync to the "off" position-- so it should not be attempting to download that book in the first place

-I've attempted to restart my iPad

-I've exited the application several times

-I've gone to the "purchased" section in the store and it does not show this book as "Installed".

-I have attempted to select and delete each copy but it will not delete once I've entered the command

Having the same problem here, on an iPad 1, iOS 5.1.1 (synched with iTunes 11.1.4 in OS X 10.6.8).

I deleted the PDF with 25 copies (not purchased, imported it myself), and it's not showing up in On The iPad anyore. I also deleted iBooks, deleted and reïnstalled all books, restored the entire iPad from backup, I tried this in all possible combinations and orders, but it's still there. I know that deleting all books from my iTunes library and importing them again works but I'm not looking forward to entering all metadata for 1350 book again 😟

Anyone an idea?

Aha! Found the solution to the problem in the post above.

  • Open the iOS device with iFunBox
  • Goto User Applications > iBooks > Documents > BKLibrary_database
  • There's a file called iBooks_vxxxxxx_xxxxxx.sqlite or something like that. Delete it. (Making a backup is never a bad idea of course).
  • Open iBooks. Since the database file is missing, iBooks rebuilds it, and without the duplicates.

So I had a similar issue happen to me but the duplicates weren't actually downloaded to the iPad, they just showed the little cloud with the down arrow symbol (indicating their in the cloud, not on the iPad). I went to Settings>iBooks and turned off show all purchases. Opened up iBooks and now none of my books showed there. Then I went back to the settings and turned show all purchases back on. When I went back to iBooks, everything was back to normal! One of each book 🙂

If it works, it may be a quicker fix than deleting the whole app, resyncing it etc.
