We have a MBP with the NVIDIA known issue--purchased in August 2007. Is there any course of action for us?

Hello!

Our daughter's MBP was purchased in August 2007. It died over the weekend and the diagnosis is this known issue. Apparently Apple is fixing these computers up to four years out from purchase. We are a few months shy of five years. The computer is at an Apple certified repair center but not at an Apple store. Do you think there is any course of action we can take for Apple to fix this? I thought I'd ask before just giving up.

We are an Apple family---two iMacs, two (soon to be three as we have another graduate) MBPs, iPad, multiple iPods, 5 iPhones, etc. I don't suppose there is anyway to play on Apple's sympathies but thought I'd ask for advice! 🙂

Thanks for any advice/help!

These are user forums. You are not speaking to Apple here. We are in no position to tell you what Apple will or will not do regarding an in or out of warranty repair. This is something you will have to ask the people who are servicing your computer.

Ultimately, you can talk to

All such situations are different. No matter what anyone here tells you, only what your Apple vendor or service person can or will do matters.

You are looking for a specific answer. You would likely ignore opposite answers. If you get an answer you like but it turns out that doesn't apply to your situation, then you will be upset. Most likely with Apple thinking you somehow got a raw deal.

If you get answers you don't like, but it turns out your situation is covered then you will think we are all a bunch of idiots for not getting the deal you got.

Because these are user forums you only get a user's opinion which may be wrong.

Wow! I am not sure what I did to get such vehemence in an answer!

You are actually not correct. I was just curious to see if anyone had had a similar issue and what their result was. I am not going to be upset if I hear from someone who got a 'desired' answer from Apple in a similar situation and I end up with an 'undesired' answer. I was just trying to gain information.

I know that Apple is under absolutely no obligation to help me. I am not looking for a specific answer---just for information/opinions/experience.

I am really shocked at your reply.

My 15" 2007 has the same issue, and what's especially alarming is I brought the machine to the Apple Store to test for this issue before the 4 year deadline was over and they said my machine wasn't part of the same batch.

However, I'm experiencing the same video distortion issues as described by others who have it. Definitely narrowed it down to the video chip, even a electronic specialist friend of mine says it's the video.

It's a shame because everything else, except the weak keyboards Apple seems to enjoy creating, works perfectly on it. I could replace the keyboard and sell the machine for $650, but now I'll have to scrap it out for parts.

Another thing, is the grill exiting the machine where the fans are blocks dust on the inside!, which is totally stupid, dust should be blocked from entering the machine on the outside, where one can wipe it off and improve air flow.

Removing the fans to clean the grills violates one's AppleCare/warranty.

Don't get me started about them denying security updates for 10.5 uses since July 2011.

Intel 10.5 got a mid May update, only because there is a 600,000 strong Mac botnet that they acted.

Apple is good at getting customers, not good at keeping them. 😢

I am sorry about your issues! I read this morning about someone who had the same issue over four years from purchase and Apple indeed fixed his computer. I am going to pursue it with my daughter's computer--it can't hurt! I might not get the same response this other person did but it is worth a try.

You are totally incorrect. The shock is at your vehemence in telling me I am in the wrong place, asking the wrong people, telling me I will get mad if I don't get what someone else got (how in the world can you make that assumption?!), etc.

You are not listening to my question. I came to the community to see if anyone had a similar issue that Apple took care of. I wanted to know if it was worth pursuing. My question was posted pleasantly, I wasn't angry, and I never said anything bad about Apple. You came in and treated me like I was dumb

These are user forums. You are not speaking to Apple here."

and told me how I would respond

How do you have any idea how I will respond?

This is supposed to be a support community. I am involved in numerous communities online--both giving and receiving advice---and have never seen such rude treatment to someone's first post, nor to someone who was not upset. I find your responses incredibly odd and rude.

I'm sorry you're upset, and I can see how you could have assumed an attitude in Kappy's first reply . . . But he was just trying to save you time. Then you got upset, he got upset, and it ended up to be a negative experience.

So, please know that Kappy is a tremendous resource here. Other helpers here may have a friendlier approach . . . but it's just not his style. He is brief, and to the point, always. But never wrong, IMHO.

If you call the numbers he linked for you, I hope you will find the support you need. I see you're in another very old thread where someone just explained in detail how they just successfully resolved this issue. That should help you quite a bit. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2675881?start=285&tstart=0

Hang around, and get to know this place a little better. It's full of help and support, from a tremendously diverse bunch of Mac users. All the best to you!

Thank you for taking the time to reply! I appreciate you trying to smooth things over. I looked over some of Kappy's other posts--I figured that with the post count he has he must not usually come across the way he did to me. I can understand brief and to the point---I don't understand rude. IMHO he was wrong this time in that he didn't address the real question I had and made assumptions about my reactions --- which were very much without merit.

Anyway, I have found, as you say, what I was looking for---someone with a similar situation. I will follow his path and see what happens in my situation---and I am not going to be mad if I don't get the same result! 🙂

Thanks again for your time and kind reply.
