Help: Aperture does not open Browser window

I'm a long time Aperture user. I believe this happened after the latest release which I updated on May 27.

When I click on Aperture, the browser window does not display. Then, if select View->Fullscreen it crashes.

Actually, it used to crash. After that I deleted ~Librarary/preferences/<aperture preferences> . After that it doesn't crash on full screen -- but the full screen view doesn't appear either.

So symptoms:

On starting Aperture, I can't see the Browser window. It doesn't crash, however.

I believe this happened after the 3.2.4 update, but not 100% sure.

Window-><show HUDs> works. So I can see the Keywords HUD, Inspector HUD etc.

But no browser window, no pictures.

Mac OS version 10.7.4.

iMac 2.8 GHz Core i7 (late 2009). 16GB memory. 3TB disk.

Things I have tried that haven't fixed the problem:

(1) trashing preferences file in ~Library/preferences

(2) Start Aperture with Shift

(3) rebooting

(4) disabling preview in preferences.

I'm hoping this is something simple, but I'm out of ideas on what to look for.

I haven't tried reinstalling Aperture yet, because I have the DVD version

Since your Aperture version crashes, even when running from a different user account, it follows that you have a system wide trouble, not only some wrong user settings in your own account. That means, that either the Aperture Application is corrupt, your MacOS X, or your hardware. So reinstalling Aperture or the OS should help, and if that fails, a general hardware test.

How to reinstall Aperture is described in the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics, see the paragraph: Installed Aperture from the DVD

To reinstall Lion you have two options: Use the link to the Combo Update on the Support page OS X Lion Update 10.7.4 (Client Combo)

or boot into the Lion Recovery to reinstall. Booting into the Recovery partion will also give you the option to do a hardware check.

I updated Lion (Client Combo) but that didn't fix the Aperture problem.

Now I need to try and re-install Aperture, but I am facing two issues:

(1) My Aperture disk was an Upgrade! There's a sticker on the DVD box that says, "Upgrade, Requires Aperture 1.0 or later". The problem is I don't have (i.e lost, or discarded) the DVD of an earlier version of Aperture.

(2) The Install Aperture from DVD instructions only go up to Snow Leopard. No Lion instructions.

Am I SOL then? One option would be to re-purchase Aperture from the App store, but that's the last option.

Can I still reinstall Aperture just from the upgrade disk? The Snow Leopard Instructions sound a bit scary:

sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.Aperture

Thanks for your continued help!

I am glad the update worked for you. Great!

If you ever need to reinstall Aperture your Aperture 3 upgrade disk should suffice, but you will need to provide the Aperture 2 and 3 serial numbers.

Cheers
