Windows 8 randomly freezes on MB and MBP

Dear community,

I have an important issue with all my MacBook and MacBook Pro.

I have installed Windows 8 Developer Preview a long time ago and was experiencing random freezes.

At that time, I have tried any possible solution to fix it... nothing worked and no solution on forums.

I have then got my hands on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but the problem was still there.

Now, Windows 8 Release Preview is out and the problem is still there.

I can't find any solution to this issue. It is not a crash but a real freeze.

I have to push the power button for 5 seconds to shut it down and then power it on.

I have tried several possibilites:

- on my MacBook Pro with a SSD

- on my MacBook (1st generation of unibody but not yet renamed in Pro) with a HDD

- in a VHD, in bootcamp partition, even as unique partition (removing any Mac OS system).

Nothing works. The freezes are very random (already happened before the login phase !).

I can stay with the system stable for 2-3 days, but sometimes it crashes after a few seconds.

I identified that Chrome and Dropbox made the system to freeze quicker, but I am not sure why.

I was thinking of 3 possibilites of issue:

- the driver of the graphic card (but it is not exactly the same in both MacBook)

- some special/reserved disk space that Windows would be trying to write

- a memory issue (trying to write in an unsafe or protected memory place)

Do someone experience this kind of freeze ?

Do someone get a fully working and never get any freeze with Windows 8 on a MB or MBP ?

It seems to work fine for people with newest MB and MBP, and MB air. I am not sure it is true.

Best regards,

Jérémie

If you upgrade over 7, Disk Cleanup - there should be 20GB from old.Windows showing under System Files

Senseless -

I run Windows 8 on Mac Pro w/o any Apple driver. What I am on now, rock solid through sleep and wake, restarts, letting it sit for hours or over night.

If you have Windows 7 running already, yes, it's Boot to VHD feature will allow you to Boot to a VHD containing Windows 8. You can use the instructions found here: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/HowToGuideToInstallingAndBootingWindows8ConsumerPr eviewOffAVHDVirtualHardDisk.aspx

I am currently doing this on an Early 2011 MacBook Pro, so I know it works, but it is a bit on the technical side to get it to work, so be forwarned.

I propose maybe a different theroy. I installed Windows 8 RP and didnt install the bootcamp drivers and still it freezes up. I also have the same problem with freezing with OS X Mountain Lion DP4 and it seems that the freezing happens when using Google Chrome. Maybe its becuase Google Chrome is not supported by either OS or maybe its Flash that is causing it. Also the freezing is not just happening to Mac Hardware, its also happening to some PC hardware. Ive tried all the solutions that has been posted online and never works so now im going to rid of Chrome and flash and see what happens.

Interesting - although, I still have the freezing without Chrome installed.

I do have a new working theory though - also a lot of activity on this thread @ xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263672&page=9

I think the issue might actually be with the nVidia CHIPSET drivers (not GPU).. the chipset drivers are ethernet, co-processor, sata controller, etc. nVidia has yet to release Windows 8 beta drivers for the chipsets yet... so this could be the issue.

It was just a theroy, at this point, its all we have. Some have had luck with not using flash and disablig hardware acceration with their browsers and with Nvidia. That might be it but unfortunatly we are screwed until they have a fix. This is so dissappointing. Im just going to run WIndows 8 using VMWare via bootcamp, not a single freeze that way. Microsoft shouldnt released this as a preview until this was fixed, many developers are having issues workign their magic when this is freezing 1-3 times an hor on average. Microsoft, get with your partners and get this fixed, you dont need this along with the critism you are already going to get with Windows 8 Metro and Charms.

I've had some issues (installing AMD display adapter drivers for Win8RP seems to have remedied them though), but I would not wish that Microsoft would have waited to release RP until a driver situation gets sorted out. It is the responsibility of the hardware manufacturers to provide stable drivers for their hardware, not Microsoft's (though Microsoft does assist them). Microsoft has to move forward and give mardware manufacturers a target to hit or the release schedule would be stagnant and we wouldn't get Win8 until 2013 or 14, waiting for every hardware manufacturer to reach stable driver milestones.

I just hope that Apple listens to all of their customers who have been complaining for years about the limitations Apple imposes on users of other OS's. Specifically, I really hope that the new version of Boot Camp (and the corresponding drivers) enable switching between integrated and discreet graphics along with AHCI in Boot Camp. If I had those two things, I think that the Macbook Pro would be the perfect laptop.

Both are totally possible and supported, but are disabled in the EFI settings. There's no good reason for these features to be disabled in Boot Camp, except that their absence makes OSX look better in terms of performance and battery life.

More people will buy Macs if they're able to use them however they want.

Here's my story. 17 inch macbook pro with Windows 8 preview release. Freezes were random but constant. I downloaded the new ATI Catalyst driver (just released specifically for Windows 8) and that seemed to help but didn't eliminate them. After UPDATING CHROME, I haven't had a freeze since. Seems they must have addressed whatever the issue is. My advice, update the devchannel chrome and see how it goes. It certainly seems the solution for me.

While it's entirely possible it is related to device drivers, it may not be related at all as well. None of the resolutions here worked for me but I stumbled on an article that where other people were having the exact same issue (on non-mac hardware) and they resolved it by installing Hyper-V, with the underlying issue being resolved in RTM (but not release preview).
