Windows 8 randomly freezes on MB and MBP

Dear community,

I have an important issue with all my MacBook and MacBook Pro.

I have installed Windows 8 Developer Preview a long time ago and was experiencing random freezes.

At that time, I have tried any possible solution to fix it... nothing worked and no solution on forums.

I have then got my hands on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, but the problem was still there.

Now, Windows 8 Release Preview is out and the problem is still there.

I can't find any solution to this issue. It is not a crash but a real freeze.

I have to push the power button for 5 seconds to shut it down and then power it on.

I have tried several possibilites:

- on my MacBook Pro with a SSD

- on my MacBook (1st generation of unibody but not yet renamed in Pro) with a HDD

- in a VHD, in bootcamp partition, even as unique partition (removing any Mac OS system).

Nothing works. The freezes are very random (already happened before the login phase !).

I can stay with the system stable for 2-3 days, but sometimes it crashes after a few seconds.

I identified that Chrome and Dropbox made the system to freeze quicker, but I am not sure why.

I was thinking of 3 possibilites of issue:

- the driver of the graphic card (but it is not exactly the same in both MacBook)

- some special/reserved disk space that Windows would be trying to write

- a memory issue (trying to write in an unsafe or protected memory place)

Do someone experience this kind of freeze ?

Do someone get a fully working and never get any freeze with Windows 8 on a MB or MBP ?

It seems to work fine for people with newest MB and MBP, and MB air. I am not sure it is true.

Best regards,

Jérémie

Ok, I was forced to go back to Windows 7. Nothing works. I would try the Hyper-V but im just so frustrated with WIndows 8, it was so unusable for me.

I am willing to try it again if I can get the trackpad to work. IThe trackpad works perfectly if I dont choose the keep all settings, apps and files option but if I chose it, the trackpad is dead. I even delete the drivers from device manager and then go to bootcamp drivers and only choosing the trackpad drivers.

I want to use WIndows 8 but I want to use my apps and not have to start all over again from scratch. I have over 160 apps so reinstalling them will suck. ANyone have any advice?

I'm fairly certain that Hyper-V is going to fix your freezing but the trackpad is a little more perplexing. I always start from scratch as I want everything to be as fresh as possible giving me far less room for old drivers or incompatabilities or something left over. I work in IT and I haven't "upgraded" anyone in years without starting from scratch. Just my take on it but I really do understand why you would rather upgrade. With 160 apps that's quite an undertaking to be sure.

Hah. I agree with you on the speed. Until this fix, I was considering switching back to Win7 for my work build, but now that it's stable, I'm definitely sticking with Win8RP. It took a bit of getting used to, but the performance is totally worth it. Now that I'm accustomed to the start menu being gone, I actually find that I'm accessing things more quickly using the new interface as well.

Yup, I will.

I'm using it right now.

No crashes about 10mins so far.

That tip was about setting some CPU parameters.

And appears to be fixed in a Windows Update earlier.

And I really don't get it setting Power management and some CPU settings will fix GPU problem.

I know this is a GPU problem.

I've seen bluescreen in CP and the fault was about nvlddmkm.sys(graphics driver) file.

I've also contacted NVIDIA about 10 times and their solution didn't worked.

I'll use it in about 2-3 more hours and update the status. :S
