Water spilled in the back of MacBook Pro. HELP!

My girlfriend's MacBook Pro was siting on my couch, closed and sleeping. The back of the MacBook was facing our end table where there was a cup partially filled with water. When I got home from work, our cats had knocked the cup over and it had spilled the water onto the couch. The couch was damp as was the bottom of the MacBook. I wiped the water off with a paper towel. There wasn't much water but when my girlfriend tried to turn it on, nothing happened. We currently have the MacBook partially open and sitting upside down trying to drain any water remaining out of it. What else should we do? What components of the MacBook could possibly be damaged? Please help!

I had a flower vase get blown over and soak mine. I don't know if I was lucky but I managed a fix like this:

Initially, and for two days afterwards, it wouldn't power up at all. I noticed something weird in that plugging the power lead on had no effect, but if I removed a power lead that was already plugged in to another lap top and used that, the green LED would light. Still wouldn't power on though. Anyhow, more by way of hunch and desperation that anything else I decided to internally disconnect the battery (it is one of those with the "do not remove or it will blow up and take your head off" type warnings. Anyway, lo and behold with the battery disconnected it powered up and was perfect. I then reconnected the battery and it powered up again with the battery in. I suspect I inadvertently removed some short or trip that had affected the battery. Anyway, as it is really easy to try I suggest anyone still in this position gives it a go. Saved me a trip to the repair hop etc. etc.

Here is a link to a site that explains battery removal, but actually you only need to go as far as disconnecting the battery cable (step 3).

I hope you get as lucky as I did I can't believe my luck.

I had the same thing happen to me - I kicked a glass of water and it went underneath and in the left hand side of my macbook pro. I lifted the lid but because it was on standby it fired up. I didn't know what to do so tried to dry it off. After a few minutes, I heard a crackling and the screen had bright green lines across it. I turned it off, took the back off, and after mopping up any water I left it for 3 days. Tried to turn it on and nothing, and it wouldn't light up the power cord either. Took it to Apple and it was going to cost at leat £600 to repair on first look. Ended up costing £800 but my hard drive was fine. Lesson learned....don't spill water, keep it in a case at all times and turn it off as soon as water gets anywhere near it.

Take it to an Apple Store, it will probably fail (not to mention smell)

Tell the store what happened before anyone handles it.

When you get a new one don't take it to the bathroom with you.

When my son spilled a Diet Coke on his Dell laptop, Dell Customer Service said not to even use a fan. Leave it open and upside-down so as much liquid as possible will run out of it. Air dry only for a week (before attempting to start it up).

Since we had already used a fan and tried other things before we called them, we ended up having to replace the hard drive and the motherboard. $600. This was 10 years ago. I'm sure it would be more than that now.
