    I think it might be better to contact AT&T on the matter rather than Apple. Then again, I have AT&T and can send MMS/SMS perfectly fine.

    I just had a thought - make sure the number listed for the contact you have chosen in Settings - Siri - My Info is the same format and is the same number as in Settings - Phone. 

     

    I remember asking Siri to call my mom at about the time this happened, and she said she didn't know who my mother was, in fact, she didn't even know who I was, and gave me a link to select my contact info.

    Been having this same problem. I've probably entered my phone number four or five times now. iPhone 4S, AT&T, 5.1.1

    I've had the same problem on 3 or 4 occassions.  I can't put together a correlation, but this last time was after running out of battery power.

    I experienced this message today out of the blue. I sent a text message just fine around noon, then when I went to the message app again around 5 p.m. I got this message.  I had not turned off, charged or sync'd the phone.  I did not enter my phone number when prompted.  I waited until I got home, read this thread and just shut down the phone.  When I started it, my number was back.  I've only had the 4S for a couple months.  This was the first time this message had popped up.  A restart seems to have fixed it.

    Here's something that seems to be working for me (so far): I did a "restore as new iPhone" from iTunes. I haven't seen the message since. Originally I upgraded the phone from 5.0.1, so I wonder whether the upgrade process might have had something to do with it. Hope this helps someone.

    I started getting this every since I got a new Macbook Air for work. Started after I connected my iCloud account. I think it may have to do with having a blank "Rob Stevens" contact that got synced from the Mac, and it was conflicting with the "Rob Stevens" contact I had set up with all my info.

     

    I've deleted the bad contact, added my number back to the Phone settings, made sure Siri was pointing to the right one, and rebooted. It hasn't recurred since, but it hasn't been very long.

    My phone has also stated doing the same thing i am with ATT iphone 4 on top of this i have been getting text messages sometimes hours after they are sent and sometimes my outgoing messages do not send even when i have good signal i will often have to retry the message 5 times or more... Furthermore my internet has been crap since the beginning of the year and steadily getting worse....

     

    I am approaching the end of my contract and have been attributing this to att trying to make me feel as though I couldnt possibly live without a new phone, but really it is making me want a new phone company after 7 years of faithfull service. Anybody else having thes problems coming up on the end of your contract?

    I was having the same problem, unlocked AT&T    4S  5.1.1     I turned phone off, waited 30 seconds, turned back on now everything is working normally

    I spoke too soon. Mine started doing it again this morning. Today, it took several tries to even get my number to save. This is getting annoying.

    1. Settings - Phone
    2. Ensure your phone number is included. Your Phone Number should be encoded based on your carrier service (+1 888-888-8888) or (88 88 8888 8888)
    3. Settings - Messages - Receive At (2 Addresses)
    4. Remove your addresses
    5. Add your addresses again
    6. You can add two types of messaging. First would be your MMS telephone number (+1 888-888-8888) and the other would be your Apple ID ME@ME.COM
    7. Caller ID - Your Telephone Number
    8. Sign Out of Apple ID if you are having issues with authentication then sign in again.
    9. Also, Settings - Store
    10. Settings - Mail Contacts Calendar
    11. Contacts - My Info - ME

    I shut my phone off, waited a few seconds, and turned it back on.  The problem has gone away for now.

    I am not sure if what is happening to me is different- iPhone 4S 5.1.1 AT&T California

     

    When I try to send an MMS to any phone that is not an iPhone the status bar times out and my carrier signal is lost. It stays lost for 10 seconds then comes back and I get the red ! exclamation mark.

     

    When I send an MMS to any iPhone iMessage sends it perfectly.

     

    I tried all of the above things changing my phone number everywhere in the phone to include a + without any luck. AT&T could not help with any of their trouble shooting either.

     

    Any help here is very much appreicated.

    Did anyone find a solution to this? It starting happening with my 4s after I replaced the sim card because I wasn't sending or recieving sms messages (imessages were no problem). After the guy at the ATT store assured me that it was the sim card and I replaced it, I'm having this problem and the original problem is still not solved.

     

    Definitely seems like an AT&T issue but after today I don't have much faith in them.

    try this settings> general> reset> reset all settings. It does not erase any thing but restores the settings to default. I am an iphone tech for a carrier by profession.
